Tek Loks better than leather sheaths?

It seems Tek Loks are the sheaths of the future. I notice a number of knifemen prefer tek loks. Perhaps it is versatile and offers multiple carry positions.

The ordinary leather sheaths only offer one or two choices.

Then there are those who just prefer the ordinary sheaths because they are time-tested.

Has the advent of tek loks knocked down the ordinary vertical sheath carry from the popularity chart?

Tek-loks are pretty bulky. :( I can only wear two or three of the large ones on my belt at a time, before my back starts to hurt when I sit down. The smalls are just a wee bit too small to fit on my 1.5" reinforced belt. :(

I love the quick detach feature though; it makes me feel like a true EDC warrior. I've got plans to make a kydex+Teklok sheath for everything I own, including my toothbrush. :D

What you might see as the next evolution in sheaths and carry systems is something that is more molded and integrated to the body. It would be interesting to create something that no matter the angle of inserting of the knife or location on the body, the carry system accomodates the user. As well, relocating of the knife does not require too much precision, especially without looking or low light conditions. The Tek Lok is close in that it allows for different carry positions. They haven't gone for enough to develop some detente click system to allow swivelling of the knife like some gun holsters I have seen. Kydex or concealex is better than leather or cordura in sturdiness although does not have the warmth of leather or the silence of leather / cordura. It would be interesting to what the come out with next although I think the kydex / Tek Lok sheaths will be around for awhile until customized type rigs come down in price.

Overall...Yeah, I'd say they very much are the future, and no doubt have somewhat put a hurt on leather sheaths, BUT...I'm a firm believer that there's still plenty of room for leather to exist.

Kydex and Tek-locks do offer multiple carry positions, good retention, quick access, etc. But...it also scratches the hell outta knives, and can make alot of noise when yer huntin' heavy brush areas. Also I've taken a dive or two, and walked into doorways that have cracked and broken mini Tek-Locks.

Compare that to leather that doesn't hurt a knife at all (unless it gets wet and isn't taken care of) and also very quiet, and flexible with various sorts of impact. Also I've found that it's got much less of a questionable nature when ya' carry a fixed blade as an EDC around the public at large. (Sheeple..sheesh, go figure, eh?)

Also, most Tek-Lock sheathes I've seen (mainly talkin' fixed blades here) just ride way the hell too high for me. It makes it hard as hell to access alot of my knives in a normal, forward grip. Thusly, they wind up being carried in a reverse grip, in order to prevent my looking and feeling like an inbred, herniated gorilla trying to reach a hard to scratch spot. Well...some folks would say I resemble forementioned primate anyways, but that's for a different discussion...:D

Of course that's mainly a design thing, but...it still seems to be the trend in factory knives. Cripe, drop the knife down a little, I'll wear a longer shirt, and also do without the rib tickling.

Point being that the Tek-Locks and kydex do have lots of great bennies, but a quality made leather sheath will NEVER be anything to turn yer nose up at.

LOL...., well OK....:) So far we have:
  • Scratches nicely finished blades...
  • Fashion disaster (i.e., appearance of inbred, herniated gorilla)

I'm liking leather better already....lol
