Hi everyone.

Going to Mexico for a wedding in november and my wife said the website said there was good surfcasting/shore fishing, with barracuda, sailfish etc

Anyone have suggestions for a decently priced telescoping rod that can handle getting out in the surf, not sure of length and line weight but was thinking in 12 to 15 feet rated for 15 to 30lb test and would load it with 20lb.

Some tackle and fishing tips would be appreciated as I have never surfcast the ocean.

I did catch 2 sockeye yesterday on the fraser river bottom bouncing after work. 10.5 ft rod with 50lb tuffline, 15 pound leader and 4 oz sinker. My buddy got a 36 inch 30lb white spring plus his 2 sockeye!!!

So I have some experience chucking lead a distance but figured I would need more distance in the surf.

Thanks

dont bother with a telescoping rod... just buy one that breaks in half and use the tube that its shipped in and ship the rod to your destination OR have it flown with you.. i see this ALL the time at airports. telescoping rods suck once you get past a certain size. imo............. as for surf set up, go check out the gadgets and gear page and look up "fishing setup" or something like that. ill try to find the link. it will help you some. also you can google your area you are going to fish and see what bites this time of year. that dictates your plan of action. also calling the local fish shops and bait shops (assuming you can since its mexico) will help you tons too..

as for surf rod lengths it all depends on your target. if your target species mainly feeds beyond the breakers than a 10-14ft rod maybe needed but they take a lot of practice bc the casting is more like a over the shoulder baseball swing. youtube it....... if your target feeds in the breakers than any size rod will work.. most surf rods are 7-12ft... ranging from medium to heavy.. i have 4-6 surf rods. includes 2 12ft'ers... i only use them for bottom fishing beyond the breakers. the height helps keep the line off of the waves so you can see strikes better. however i can cast a 8-10ft rod further bc its easier to handle... if i were you i would not go above 10ft. thats just me but again i am not sure of the surf fishing in mexico either. i fish the shores of NC mainly. waves average 1-6ft mostly 1-4ft.... you need to do more research on your target species and where they feed. when is the trip? if you have time we can get you set up pretty good

find out 2 things.. are the fish you are fishing for caught by bottom fishing or by cast and crank?? thats a must have info!

Take a trip over to surftalk and do a search for a guy named High Plains Drifter.
He is the man for Mexican surf fishing.
Lots of great threads, gear tips and how-to's
I doubt you'll get a sailish from the beach though...
