tell me about fire steels????

Ok I know this is a dumb question but I feel a little caught in the middle! I have a kershaw fire steel that works great for me, but for my questions how long do they last, what exactally are they made out of, do they wear out after the coating wears off, and what is the best kind and or style? Sorry for the dumb question I just am a little lost, any help would be great- Joel

Depends on how big they are.
Rare earth metals.
They all wear out.
Light MY Fire and the ones from Going Gear.
And as I have proved there are no dumb questions, just dumb answers.
