Tell me about G Shock Batteries

My boy has a G-2900 G Shock and the battery appears to have died. With four screws to hold the back on it would seem simple enough to replace it, but it seems I read somewhere, probably on here that they need to be sent to the factory for replacement.

True? And if so is that to insure it's water proofness is in tact when done?

Thanks

Yes, Gshocks have like, 15 layers of seals and shock buffer layers that go on, and taking it apart (I've seen construction pictures, never tried it myself) looks like a lost part/broken seal waiting to happen.

My father and I have DW-6100's that we aren't too hard to take apart and swap out old batteries on. You just need to make sure to seal it up correctly. You'll never know if it's pressurized correctly, but mine hasn't leaked yet.

I also have 2 g-shocks and had batteries replaced in both at some point by a local mall jeweler. The watches are fine and no leaking. I've swum with both at some point after having the battery replaced.

Anyway, the trick is to remove the 4 screws and then make sure the seal that goes around the case doesn't get caught when closing the back again.

I think for regular swimming and showering, washing,... it's fine. I don't know if I'd really dive with a g-shock, but that's a whole other thread...

I use to use a g-shock diving, it never leaked...until
I had the battery replaced at the jewlers, the next dive, death at -85ft.
The watch not me

if you take your time and pay attention to what you're doing you'll be fine. do a search for g-shock forums and you'll find one with detailed instructions with pictures. the only additional step is you may have to reset the watch after the batter install. i'm not talking about reset like the time i'm talking about reset like reboot a computer. it's easy and the instructions show you how. good luck. ahgar

Thanks to the above link I got the battery changed. It was nice to have the photo's and directions. Seems to be running fine. Time will tell if it is sealed up proper!

Thanks again

don't worry i've done several with no problems and i'm a talking monkey with two left hands. later, ahgar
