I recently acquired this Civilian:
http://cpm440v.tripod.com/civilian.htm

As you can see, it does not have the giant clip with the kraton inlays. At first, I thought it looked strange, but to tell you the truth, I prefer it with this more 'regular' clip.

Is this an older version of the Civilian? Was it made before the model with the kraton clip? Is it more rare?

Also, I would like to send it in to Spyderco. I has not been used, only carried, but the edge is not as sharp as I'd like and the action is gritty. It seems like there are major rough spots between the lock bar and the tang. Also, the kraton inlay is peeling near the edges. Will the warranty department work on this or is the Civilian not covered at all by Spyderco?

Thanks for any help.

Well, in my limited experience, your Civilian has had the clip changed. It should have had the Kraton-lined clip specific only to that model. My pre-production non-Tuffram Civie bears the Kraton clip, so unless there was something else done at the factory, they stuck to that until the G-10 models came out (that's a black clip).

ThinkOfTheChildren,
Please don't take this wrong but ever since I saw your "handle", I've always wanted to tell you; "No, YOU think of the children, I don't want to anymore!". I raised three kids and they are now in their 30's. So PLEASE, YOU think about them from now on and I'll send YOU the bills!! :p

I'm with Hawkbill. I've had many early Civilians and I think you have one with a simple clip change. You MAY have seen a pic with one like yours but it too was probably a clip replacement also. That's NOT to say that some could have come without the krayton clips. There were many variants in the old days. Call the Spyderco Service Dept. and ask them. They're good people and will let you know and also set you straight on fixing your knife.

Where did you get that...if it was from who I think it was, then it is a clip that was added on. He's been selling his collection on ebay. I saw a titanium handle police model that had a civilain clip from the same guy. This is probably a clip swap. I have 3 of the early civilians and my buddy has one that is uncoated and numbered. They all have the same rubberized clip. Hope this helps

I got it from Bobby Inman who sold it to me over Glocktalk under the handle "Mr. Joshua."

That sucks that the clip isn't original but I got it for only $90 so I'm not going to complain.

Gene,
Lol. People always tell me the funniest reactions to my handle.
