Looking for information on a few sog knives i purchased recently,
Such as steel and what not. Both are new in box and I paid $60 for both. They both have the receipts that is dated 1997. I also want to know if I should just use these knives or preserve them.

Tomcat & old school Tigershark... You should just sale them back to me....you got an excellent deal?

The Tomcat is made for SOG by G.Sakai, Seki in Aus6. The early Tigershark was made by Kinryu, Seki in SK5 carbon steel.

JACKPOT!

ManRay, you have the score of the year in those.

Highly collectible. I would preserve and admire. Get used knives from the Exchange or eBay for everyday use.

Either way, enjoy your knives.

Regards,

If i didn't know better,
I would imagine that you had me going there for a while ;-)
Come on!
Use these knives? Seriously???!
ha! Ha!
And you only paid $60??
That's a really good one.
But if this really is the absolute truth,
I would advise having them as safe queens.
Or dispose them only to serious vintage sog collectors.
Nice catch, btw.

Yes I am being serious, I bought these from my Swap meet knife dealer and a few more, I think one is called a "Duo" or something like that. I had the tomcat listed on another forum for a short period but pulled it when someone said it was worth more than what I had it listed for. He had a few more but wanted $90 apiece for them. One was a blued blade with a leather handle, probably should have bought it in hindsight.

Heres a link to the knife im talking about, http://www.sogknivescollectors.com/recon-bowie-sbr80.php the handle leather was kinda worn and that turned me off from buying it.

Wow!
Sorry for having ever doubted your post.
You do realise that opportunities such as these are unheard of
Or at the very least...
Simply not the usual everyday occurance
But clearly an almost heaven sent find to stumble upon.
Yes! You most certainly hit pay dirt.
And you let a recon bowie walk...
I understand why a less than mint finishing could be a turn off.
If its any consolation, you probably did the first logical thing
By not taking any chances with less than perfect goods.
Not everyone can learn to live with "mistakes"?
Collector value for long discontinued models
Will always be there for the niche collector market.
And it boils down to the point in time
Where a standard production model in whatever condition
becomes a rarity in the secondary market.
So its pretty much all about timing.
With many senior collectors not having time on their side...
To wait it out for the returns.
As a general rule
Collect only what truly tugs at your heart strings.
If its not love at first sight
One might be in for more than what one might had bargined for originally.

I've wanted a Tomcat ever since I saw one in (of all places) a Sharper Image catalog.

Ahh well, the recon bowie wasn't meant to be I guess. Also im not too worried about return values in the near future as these knives are older than me.

I got the exact shark mint condition,& i use it. I am not a collector. That semi s5 Convex chops like a machine.

Since those are both from 1997 and likely unused, I would probably keep them that way. Put them in a display or something. Normally I'm a user, but those are early and not available any more and new so. . . ;) Congrats and enjoy!

By the way, 11 or so years ago I scored a lightly used Tigershark like that. It's been one of my users and it works great! Like Carney C said above, chops like a machine!
