So I'm looking at getting a sweet pea, or a 3 day assault pack from mystery ranch. I like the molle attachment on the 3dap. Beings able to organize gear and put a sleeping bag on the bottom of the 3DAP is a pluse. The sweet pea is very close though and at 2/3 the price that is a pluse $100 could go a long way towards other gear. So do you have either and what do you think about it?

Mystery Ranch, formerly Dana Designs, owned by Dana Gleason,

I have owned several of Dana's packs, you will not be disappointed. I just received the 3Day Assault, haven't had a chance to get it out in the woods yet. But if it's like his other packs. I'll be happy.

Weight wise the Sweet Pea will be lighter, i would not worry about wearing out any Mystery Ranch pack. Buy with confidence.

Hope this helps,

Ramiel77 has some great youtube reviews on the 3DAP. There is also a very thorough comparison review on the Sweet Pea and 3DAP by another person that is well worth watching.

I have a NICE frame with the Crew Cab and Longbow bags, plus the daypack lid and three load cells. I really like the modular system and bomb-proof construction. Great stuff!

Mystery Ranch is the best you can get, IMO. I have used old Dana's as well as current mystery ranch packs as a professional trail worker for the past six years and have never been let down.

I have the Sweat Pea and love it. Its place in my line up is a smallish pack that carries a heavy load very well. It is a little heavy due to the great suspension and bomb proof construction. I have other similar sized packs I carry for really light loads or when theft is a risk.

I would love to try one but have no experience with the 3DAP.

Agreed with all of the above. When I was younger I used two Dana design packs and put many, many wonderful miles on them. They worked without fail and I still have them today. As I remember it, in those days (about 20 years ago) they were THE packs to have.

A couple of years ago, I was looking at the Sweat Pea and I couldn't find much info on it but based on my past experience with Dana designs I decided to go for it. After a call to Mystery Ranch, I decided to go with the heavier belt since I would be carrying more weight. I am really happy with it.

A possible concern I had was with the zippers. Not that the zippers aren't quality (they are) but just zippers in general for certain environments where dirt or dust can cause them to seize. I haven't had a problem with them yet but that could be a concern in certain areas (like windy deserts).

I had an old Dana Terraplane back in the day. It was a bomber pack, but you sure paid for it in weight. Of course at that time, the options for good quality, durable packs that were also lightweight were much more limited. Not the case anymore.

The Mystery Ranch packs are certainly of equal quality to Dana's previous products, but again - the weight has really put me off. It seems that their "Adventure' line are more reasonable in the weight dept, but their hunting packs are ungodly heavy. There's just no reason that a 3000 cu. in. pack needs to weigh almost 6lbs with nothing in it.
