Tell me about Spydie Tenacious

Hey fellas,

I have been looking for a good, relatively lightweight EDC folder. I've got a few "tacticool" EDC folders (ZT 0350, Gerber 06 Auto, few BM's + more) but I would like something a little smaller/lighter. And really I could just use a new toy. :D

I've never had a Spyderco but I've been checking them out more and more and the Tenacious looks like a good entry level Spydie to start off with.

Would you all say this is a good call or should I look for another Spyderco to start off my collection. Could you also tell me about the Byrd line too?

Thanks guys, I know there's a few requests in here!

Max

I've EDC'd a Tenacious for about a year now and have no complaints. It has solid lockup (no blade play in any direction) and comes pretty sharp out of the box. The steel is quite decent for the price. It's a bit heavier and bigger than some people would like for an EDC blade, but I've had no issues.

Overall, you'd probably have a hard time finding a better beater for the money. I certainly don't regret buying one.

Hey man, thanks for your reply. That's certainly the impression I've been getting from the prices I see and the things I read. Plus I've always heard Spyderco knives are wicked sharp right out of the box.

You wont regret getting it. I love mine, even more than my Delica4 which cost twice as much. Get it!

Since you mentioned "smaller/lighter", consider also the Spyderco Persistence. Same thing as the Tenacious, but one notch smaller. But you would be happy with either one.

Yep! I think its probably going to happen! And I have the distinct feeling that its not going to be my last spyderco. I've been perusing the forum and the interwebs and I'm starting to really get a hankering for a LOT of them.

The Tenacious is a good knife, made in China, but sturdy with good quality control. However, it is not a light knife by any means.

If you are looking for a light knife, have you checked out the Kershaw Skyline? It's in the same price range and an added bonus is that it is a USA made knife if I'm not mistaking.

You are correct about being made in the USA.

I have both the Tenacious and the Skyline and love them both. The Skyline finds it's way into my pocket more often because of the lighter weight.

The tenacious IS a phenomenal deal.

However it's NOT a small/lightweight knife. It's not realy "big and heavy" (to some people it is) but it's nowhere near lightweight.

If you absolutely are looking for light, this isn't the knife for you. If you're looking for a great spyderco, this is one. Lightweight options I'd say look for a Delica or S30V Native, both are more expensive though.

I find the knife quite light for what you get.

We are talking $40> for a Full Flat Grind, G10, thick Liner Lock, Drilled Liners, Awesome Ergonomics, Great Jimping, 4 way pocket clip, and a TON of edge!

The blade flies out with a flick of the thumb and the edge is super easy to bring back to hair shaving sharp.

i asked about the same knife and all the feed back i got was good for the Tenacious so i bought it and all i can say is i like it but there is one thing about buying a new knife try to find a way to get it i your hands because then you can see if you realy like it

I did not own a Spyderco or a serrated blade knife, and when I saw I could get the Tenacious for $30 delivered (!) I thought it would be an inexpensive way to try out both simultaneously so I got the full serrated version. I am very impressed with the quality. The texture of the G10 is the best I have ever felt - they really nailed it. The liner is nice and beefy and the whole package feels like quality in the hand. It has joined the car knife staff (along with a Cold Steel SRK and a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker). I have never cared for the look of Sypdercos. The thumbhole hump I find to be not the aesthetic that pleases me, but that is just a personal style preference. I do like the knife, t hough, and am glad I could get the Spyderco experience without dropping a lot of coin.

Heck yea guys, thanks so much for your replies. I think I am going to go for it. It sounds like a heck of a buy and if it end up being too heavy...then I guess I'll have another excuse to buy another knife! :D

What other Spyderco's do ya'll like?

I would certainly recommend the Tenacious based on the one I tried out, for the following reasons:
-Blade: I enjoy flat grinds for aesthetics and cutting ability. If you've never used one, then now's a good place to start.
-Handle ergonomics. I realise this is subjective, but the Tenacious, like most Spydercos, fits great. The Persistence is even better but I have small hands.
-Lock. Even for a left-hander, the lock cutout is nice and generous for easy access.

One thing to note is that the edge is close to the blade-no kick or finger choil. Be careful while closing it. I personally like this feature on knives, although I like a 50-50 choil even more, since it allows greater control (like an Opinel, Mora or SAK does) over whatever you're cutting.

That said, as an entry level Spyderco I myself would spring for (and did two years back) a Delica-4. Lightweight, excellent handle material, 4 way clip and now FFG blade. It's a very refined design and really works.

(Also, necessary plug for Opinel here, which fulfils the small-light category perfectly)

All of them.

Good ones to try though, are the Manix 2, Paramilitary/Military, Caly 3 and Stretch 2. And one of my favorite "small" knives is the Rookie... 3" of blade in a positively tiny package.

Since $$ wasn't mentioned, consider an Endura 4 FRN FFG or a G-10 version. I've had about all of them and the Endura 4 FFG is my favorite choice for a lightweight EDC other than the BM 940 which is in it's own league. :)

GET IT

It's an excellent folder for the money. Strong lock up, pretty decent steel (not very hard making it sharpens way easier), stainless steel liners (both sides), excellent ergo, very nice F&F, and large belly for such a "small" knife.

Small : I usually EDC a military / large sebenza. The tenacious blade length is close to that of the military / sebenza, but overall length is way smaller.

I have both the Tenacious and the Skyline and love them both. The Skyline finds it's way into my pocket more often because of the lighter weight.

I like the Skyline more than the Tenacious because the Tenacious seems to take up an awful lot of pocket real estate. Whenever I reach into that pocket, the side of my hand scrapes up against it.

I do dig the Tenacious quite a bit though (for the price it's hard to dislike the Tenacious), but more than either of them I'm grooving on a Mini Griptilian right now.

GOT IT! :) I just ordered it from the Spyderco store this morning.

Thanks to all for the info and the input! I'll certainly shoot the obligatory pics once it comes in, hopefully by the end of the week! Now...what to add next. hehe.

NICE ! I know you will enjoy your Tenacious like I did mine. I never expected such quality from that kind of price tag, but boy was I surprised when I finally got mine. :D
