Tell me about striping the finish.

I have a ratmandu and a rodent solution. The ratmandu is never far away from me. It doesn't get used much, but I like having it. Here's my problem. One use I want is for cooking. It probably would be the biggest use of it (since the knives at work SUCK and about 75% of the time I carry a small slip joint Davison) but the finish makes it suck. Stuff sticks to it, etc. At least that's what I think. I suspect that stripped it would be better (granted not great but I'm not going to carry a cooking knife around) and still be a useful for splitting fire wood if needed.

So I've seen people stripe there bussekin. Will stripping it make it a little better slicer than it is? How do I strip all around the micarta (it's tanker grey with green micarta) without ruining it? Is removing the scales possible and easily reinstalled?

Thanks in advance and don't slap me around too hard with "that's not what it's for's" and "why woodja"s.

Don't worry about trying to pull the scales or getting some stripper on the micarta. The stripper will dry it out some, but will not hurt it. When you're done with the job, just rub some mineral oil into the scales if you like, and you're ready to go.

Also, if you want to keep your logo, you will want to acid-etch it before stripping the blade coating.

Thanks man! That was my biggest fear.

What do I use to strip the finish?

Dollar bills. About 5-10 of them will get you the stripper you desire at your local people of walmart paint section. Citristrip or Kleenstrip work great along with the other items in the picture below:

Just like Tim said, that's what you need.
Might need some sandpaper too to sand some the ridges from CNC machine if it's one made in the last 4 years or so

You can also just strip the blade and leave the tang coated, a little protection from your sweaty paws...

I think I used kleenstrip like in Tim's picture. Just any good paint stripper.

Sweet. So just submerse the whole thing in stripped?

I really appreciate the advice, all.

I just grabbed a disposable brush and painted it on, didn't immerse it. Waited a bit til it bubbled and scraped it, repeat as needed. Those stiff brushes will be handy too.

Thats what I've done was well, just get a package of those acid brushes (cheap stuff) and slop it on nice and thick and wait. I've had to take a few applications some times.

Reminds me I have a couple that need to be stripped of that nasty stuff soon! :D

I've stripped a few and no damage to any of my handle scales from the stripper.

I have never acid etched the logo, and have not had a logo disappear. But, I've never sanded one satin after stripping either.

It must be hit and miss on the logos. The 711 I stripped lost the logo completely, not from a regrind, just from stripping. Looks good sterile though.

Well, my sample size was only 2! So not too hard to be wrong!

Same with me here, I've had logo's vanish, stay well, and some are ghosted. I figure its the depth they were engraved in the first place.

Lol. I dont think you're wrong, i think it's like dwayne said. Maybe due to the depth of etching some fade and others stay. I wish mine had stayed without the extra step.

I've got access to 36% hcl. I may etch it a little if I decide to do it. I really like it coated too! Not sure what I wanna do...

I taped up the handle on my mmd with masking tape, went to home depot and bought spray on stripper. the spray on stipper lifts the finish and wipes of dryer then brush on. I just scraped it off with paint scraper and wipe it down.
