How is the steel? Tougher than Swamprat, or about the same? Says its not as tough as normal infi. What were the blade specs? Can they steel be found? Where these ment to be user busses?

Bare with me, I just woke up...

Modifided(sp?) Infi is good
SR 101 is better
INFI is the best

I believe the basic line was to make a more affordable knife for those unable to afford those beautiful busses.

A search may help on some topics, I can't do one right now

Guys have used these are beaters and been very pleased

And with that, I'm gonna go drink an amp

Edit: Hope this helps: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304310&highlight=Basic

And with that.. I'm off like hogs at blade show opening

In field use you will not see a difference between INFI and Modified INFI.

You will between INFI and SR-101.

The SR-101 will dull faster in soft clean material, be able to flex further with out taking a set and hold a better edge cutting abrasive, grit filled material.
And is better for chopping things like cement blocks or rebar.

INFI and modified INFI got no competitors for Push cutting Soft clean materials like rope, hide, leather, chopping wood, flesh,,,,and is real easy to steel an edge back to usable if you decide to dig a hole in rocky ground.

Early INFI was hardened to a higher rockwell and some times chipped,
Modified INFI and later INFI was a bit softer and deflects rather than chipping. A real improvement for hard use, if you dent the edge it can usually
just be steeled back into place.

There are those who prefer Modified INFI to INFI.

I have some of each steel,,,,,they each have their own use.

Use each and decide for your self the right steel for you.

Thanks for the info guys....

Do you think a basic 5 would be too large for edc? Or is the 3 too small?

A Basic 3 is part of my EDC rotation. I've never felt under prepared with it. I guess it depends on what you find yourself doing every day.

I carried a Basic 3 and a Basic 5 off and on back when I only had a hand full of knives. If you can find a Basic 5, I say grab it. You won't be sorry for having done so. I have a Basic 9 I bought well used and it continues to have the snot beat out of it. I smack the spine with a hammer to split logs and everything. There are some dents and dings, but nothing that worries me. The hammer head was obviously hardened more than the spine, so I expected it. With a the rolls and deformation I have put on this blade, it comes back to hair popping sharp after some work on a strop and a stone. I love this monster.

Is 5 too big? Don't really have any laws here about carrying, was wondering though about the weight of it carrying it around all day

I was lucky and hunted down the 3,5,7, and 9 the 5 is my do everything knife a great knife I also use the 3 alot when I camp I take my 7 and 9 also but the 5 is always with me I have a combo sheath with my 5 and SF6P. You will not be sorry getting any of the basics and if you don't like it I'll buy it.
Good luck.
Peace
Bob
