On a lark, I bid on one at eBay and won the auction. Ran me $16 plus $5 shipping. Is that a decent price?

Looked like a good knife for fishing, particularly since I often wade fish, and a neck sheath would come in handy. How do these hold up? How's the grip? Has anyone done anything creative about the handle (wrapping, custom work, etc.)? What about edge retention? Tell me what you know....

You did well with that bid, assuming the knife is in good condition. I think the MSRP is around $25.

I have heard of people wrapping the handle with paracord, and I have seen our very own Taz put g10 on one. He offers some inexpensive deal for you if you want to have g10 put on the handle.

plus, you paid what you would have locally, with shipping.
you did good.
i think youll like it.

IT is terrible! (until you wrap it)

I think that for the price it is an awesome knife, but if you have hands like mine (human) you probably wont like it at first.

I wraped mine in paracord, but i found that the perfect setup was to just use the outside of the paracord (i removed the inner threads)

Mine wasnt that sharp when it came, my sharpmaker changed that, the 420hc kinda sucks, but this is one of the better examples.

Overall, it's neat

Thanks for the responses.

The knife is new, so I guess $21 was a fair deal. I'm curious about Taz and the G10. I might try to get ahold of him and see what he charges. My only worry with paracord is that the cord would tend to hold water and cause rust. G10 would likely dry much faster.

iirc, 420 is very rust resistant.
as a blade steel it isnt great, but camillus did a good HT on these, and keep and edge fairly well.
you just have to keep in mind that it IS a 20 dollar knife.

sure, they could have rounded the edges down, instead of leaving them sharp. the price would likely double, though. and you can do it with sandpaper and a few minutes of your time. its very much like when the buck strider came out. the g10 scales were sharp on the corners, but rounding it down at the factory would have made the price go up by 30 bucks.

cord wrapping or having tim put on some g10 will help immensly, though.
YMMV.

Yeah, ya did fine. It is right in there for a new one.

I have absolutely no problem with the handle. No need for wrapping here. This is a knife that hangs there until you need it for a sec, does it's job, then goes back to hanging there. I like it for the times when I got no pockets. Whip it around your neck and away you go.

Lots of people can't stand the steel, but I have no problem with it. It's not like this is an extended use knife.... If you are going to butcher a couple elk, you should be using a different knife, period. The beauty of this knife is that it disappears under your T-shirt until you need a knife. That and the price. Oh, and the sheath. ;)
