Ok, I've heard the stories about NASA spending millions designing this pen while the Russians just used pencils. Not true if the Fisher website is correct. Still, a good story.

I've also noticed that a lot of folks on BF carry one. Do you? How does it write?

I've got several Fishers that I rotate out with other pens for my EDC writing utensil. The Fishers are very good, high quality. Some have complained about blotty refills but I have yet to experience this problem. The pressurized cartride makes for very smooth writing. Though, not as smooth as a rollerball or fountain pen, but definitely a lot smoother than regular ballpoints. The only thing I don't like about the Bullets is that they don't come with clips. Which is fine for casual users, but since I do a lot of writing during the day, invariably I will set my pen down on an uneven surface. If there's no clip, I'm going to be down on hands and knees trying to pick the damn thing up. So, I bought clips for all of my Bullets to prevent them from rolling. They are easy to carry - I suggest buying a clip with them anyways just so you can have that other mode of portage. They lay well in the bottom of the pocket too. If you get a Fisher, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.

I've carried one for about two years now and I love it. The little thing's friggin' invincible. When it gets dirty or something, I just toss it in a pot of boiling water, with the refill in it. I suggest getting the clip, too, because it does always roll off of things, and it keeps it from getting scratched up on the other stuff in your pocket. Sometimes the refill does get kind of gummed up, but after writing a few words it goes away. It's also nice to be able to write at angles without having to shake it to get the ink to flow and it fits very nice in your pocket. I haven't got a belt pouch for it yet, but they look pretty cool.

I have one and carry it quite often. Just the other day I forgot and left it in my pants; pulled it outta the washer and it wrote just as good as ever :D It isnt quite as smooth as my rollerballs, but its smaller and writes at all angles and on almost anything. Not to mention you can get one for less than $25

I highly recommend.

I don't think anything else can be said except...get one. A simple, classic, and elegant piece of equipment.

Staples? (I think) Black bullet, came with clip. $14.95 Might also try the all metal (black, silver, etc.) cap-o-matics. FYI Parker ball pens will also take Fisher refills.

I agree with DExter Ewing, if you get one be sure to get the clip too, it is very strong and versatile clip.
Its writing is good for realtively inexpensive ballpoint however, it does not compare with quality of writing in many inexpensive fountain pens.
But its useful, upside down writing, etc

Martin

Why would NASA spend millions for a replacement for the pencil and why would Fisher spend nearly as much to replace it? This doesn't pass the "Ha Ha" test because it doesn't make sense. Fisher developed the "Space Pen" to work in 0-gee and so that the ink would be permanent.

I have had Bullets for year and have had a Mellinium for over a year. I have also used numerous Fisher pens because they write in the rain and are permanent (a requirement for environmental field log books). While I like the "space pens" they are not the best writing instuments available. Half the time you'll get a pen that tends to skip or blotch. They are not very smooth either. But, they will work under the most absurd conditions, though. Of course, so will a Sharpie fine point.

Recently a friend gave me a Cross Ion. Writes on wet paper, doesn't run, and doesn't skip or blotch, and has great "gizmo" factor with the way the tip is exposed. While I like it I still prefer to carry my Bullet or Mellinium since I've literally used dozens of "space pens" over the past decade.

If you want a good writing pen get a Zebra ball point. If you need a pen that writes in the rain on wet paper get a Fisher.
