I am interested in learning more about my new neck knife from Emerson. It is the standard Le Griffe. What is the quality of the steel, and the hardness of it. Since I wear it around my neck 24/7, does this knife have issues with rust or corrosion?

Also, if I ever have to sharpen it, where do I take it?

Thank you for your help.

Does anyone else have a La Griffe, and have you had any problems with it?

What do you like about this neck knife?

In my opinion, the LaGriffe is the best production necker available for SD purposes.

It is very, very comfortable to wear.
Has a super flat profile.
The edge and point were amazingly sharp on the two I've bought.
Fit into the sheath is ideal.
Is relatively light in weight due to the holes in the handle.
Premium steel - 154CM
Ring for retention.
Black coated.

Only issue I'd say is that because of the hawkbill shape, its use is pretty much limited to SD.
But for that purpose, IMO it's the best of the production neckers, as noted.

If you're looking for something that has utility use as well, but is not quite as good for SD (IMO) take a look at the Buck Kaala.
Another great knife, though very different from the LaGriffe.

Everything rifon2 said with one exception, it makes a great box cutter in addition to an SD Tool.

For opening up boxes, cutting rope and the like in the warehouse it's hard to beat.

Always wanted one and finally got one a few months back. Hasn't left the EDC since :D

Thanks for your responses.

It took awhile for me to get use to having something like this around my neck. Now I feel naked without it. I personally don't like using a self defense knife as a utility knife. I never was one to wear a knife, but now I usually carry as many as three knives, especially at work. I am in LE, and I carry a cheapo SW SWAT titanium knife as a tool/prybar/jimmyda-door tool...etc, a KaBar TDI on my duty belt, and the La Griffe which goes with me everywhere. At home I carry my La Griffe everwhere, and a Spyderco Pacific Salt in my gunbag (a fanny pack is what badguys do to each other in jail...:jerkit:)

Is this steel known for great edge retention, and any issues with rust?

Yes, 154CM is a premium, time proven stainless steels with excellent edge retention.

There are some new "super" stainless steels on the market: S30V, BG-42, CPM154 and a few others, but 154CM is nonetheless a premium, top grade stainless.

And rusting can be a risk for any stainless, even coated stainless, that comes in contact with sweat. Sweat is one of the most corrosive substances to steel. So I'd wipe down the blade with Tuf-Cloth, and check it from time to time. No need to do any more than that, as far as I'm concerned.
