Hey guys, I somehow managed to pick up a nice lookin' ZTSJ from Trevor, and I'm wondering what you guys can tell me about it. It's history, how rare it is, how many were made in what configurations, the meaning of "Zero Tolerance," how it's different from other SJs. etc. Basically, anything you know about the knife that's interesting. Thanks!

According to the Bad Mojo site, Past Line, Zero Tolerance: ".... There is a Zero Tolerance (tan handles, 2/3 grind with swedge grind) Satin Jack model but it is at the regular SJ thickness of approx. 1/4" and is priced at $347. There will only be 100 of this model made. ...." Jerry Busse

Keep in mind this was back in the day....

I know the ZT's were a big item back in the oh 2002-2003 range? Somone help me out with those years.

There were four knives in the series...

  • Zero Tolerance Battle Mistress
  • Zero Tolerance Steel Heart
  • Zero Tolerance Natural Outlaw
  • Zero Tolerance Satin Jack

All were fairly limited to a few hundred pieces, and IIRC the Satin Jack was the fewest made of the four models.

These were all thinner than the standard combat line....I want to say 3/16" but like I said I owned a nice set for a short period however my mind is oriented to FAT INFI so details on thin pieces tends to get deleted :) Though I "think" the ZTSJ was thicker around 1/4"

There were two "batches" if you will to the ZT's. All had tan canvas micarta handles. The first batch of a few hundred had a "rougher", I suppose is the correct word, fit and finish. The second half of the ZT series were all the same specs but MUCH cleaner lines and fit and finish...more towards the level you'd expect for a regular production run piece.

There were also some nice design characteristics with the grind and a swedge at the tip but I cant remember the exact details.

Really quite nice knives....extremely popular during their release....especially the ZTSJ because it was more limited.

Rough is a good word for the early Released ZT knives.

Scratches, Grind burns, no sheaths.

I had several sets from the very first ones done.

So Early were my knives that I got 4 or 5 Mis-marked ZT Natural Outlaws, they were marked the same as the ZT Steel Hearts.

I was able to talk Jerry into letting me keep one mis-marked ZTNO as long as I agreed to not post any pictures of the knife for Five long years.

The rest got sent back to the Factory for new engraving.

The ZTSJ was an odd knife in that it was a different thickness than the rest and only one hundred rather then Four hundred.

Also odd about the ZTSJ was the pricing, all the other ZTs were cheaper than the Standard E-Models, the ZTSJ cost more than the Standard model.

At the Time of Issue, Satin Finish knives could be gotten from the Factory for a $75.00 upcharge.

A standard SJ was $227.00 I think, so for an upcharge of about $125.00 you got a Satin Finish, top ground limited but not numbered Edition.

I am thinking about top sharpening the false edge on my ZTBM and making a woods knife out of it.

Forward tilt, weak side carry as a crossdraw in it's Buy Brown sheath.

Maybe replace my user So called One of three Hundred with it.

Fast Knife that ZT is.

I only Keep two Satin Jacks, the First Satin Jack ever sent to a Dealer for re-sale and an ZTSJ.

Edited to add:

About half way through the production of the ZT Knives The Factory Bought some new Machines for making the Satin Finish faster and Easier,

As a Result of that, the 2nd half of production and all Satin Busse knives made or finished after that had Much nicer Satin Finishes.

+1 yes thanks andre and everyone else for all the info

as a side note on this one i have the edge is ground down pretty good in front of the guard making it almost bowie shaped

i see they were made in two batches
were there some wild variance in grinds as well as fit and finish on these ?

the two lower right customs I recognize and IIRC they were part of a three knife set...I think made for Skunk way back in the day.

As for the one on the top right can you take some more straight on pics? The grinds are playing with the light.

Yes there were very different grinds on the ZTs, mosy noticable on the ZTNOs

But three minor differences in the top grinds of the 100 ZTSJs, I think, but then I have both slept and inbibed since I put my notes in Storage.
