Tell Me About This Knife

I found this knife rolling around in my closet (I think I confiscated it from one of the boys a few years ago). Although I'm sure its not worth much of anything, I was wondering if you Schrade junkies might be able to tell me a little about it. It says "Old Timer" on the scales. On the blade it says Schrade+, USA, 70T.

So...how old is this thing? What kind of steel is the blade? How much is it worth?

Here are a few crappy pictures taken on my phone:

Ok, so I read the FAQ's and gathered it is a

Schrade 7OT Cave Bear; 5"; clip - lockback

Would still like the other questions answered if you would be so kind though.

Thanks again,
Jarhead

It was made from 1991 to 2004.
Worth? Ebay has been down lately, but I would put it in the $10 to $25 range depending on condition. The less pristine, the lower the price.
When the blade says Schrade +, it is stainless steel. If it doesn't say Schrade +, it can be carbon steel or stainless steel.

Merry Christmas,
Dale

hello i.jarhead, welcome to the site, theres some answers to your questions a couple of threads down "7-ot or 7ot" by hedger. 2 of the schmartest guys around just answered most of your questions. as to the worth? its hard to say, to throw a number out there proboly around 50.00 give or take. no sheath? no box? no paperwork? use marks on the blade? the going price depends on how many people would be interested in it and how bad they wanted it at any given moment. ck the bay for other similar auctions, thats will give you the realtime answer on worth.--------you know the best thing to do would be to get rid of it immediatley, now,as soon as possible, dont look at it or hold it, open and close it,hear the click of the lock, or notice the stoutness of it anymore, or realize what a piece of history is in your hand. failure to obey may cause you to become one of us SCHRADEAHOLICS------------goodluck, brady

I actually plan to use this knife to practice some of my sharpening techniques. I was playing with my Lansky last night, along with a little bit of stropping on a piece of cardboard. Although I was able to get it pretty damn sharp, the burr seemed to flop from side to side a little easier than I thought it should. Even using the ultra fine stone with light pressure and finishing with the stropping, I can't seem to get it as sharp as some of my other blades. That is what lead to my question about the steel.

My most prized Shrade is a similar 110 clone, but it is an Uncle Henry with stag handles. I don't believe in safe queens, and it has been used quite a bit on different hunting excursions. A gift from my brother about 15 years ago, it has alot of sentimental value to me.

That's an LB8! I wouldn't mess with it too much. These are harder to come by. I'm afraid to use mine so I decided to get a nice 7OT to spare my LB8. Any serial number on her?

Thank you for YOUR service too!:thumbup:

I was medevaced in 1972 (Viet Nam), spent 10 months in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital (Oakland, CA) and some time recovering from surgery at Treasure Island. I got a medical discharge (Honorable of course) with 10% disability in 1973. Since then my medical problems have gotten much worse & my rating was increased several times through the years. I was given a 100% service connected rating in 2004.

If you were not medically retired from the Corps, you should be able to get that as well as your service connected rating. They changed the law a few years ago so that you can draw both retirement & disability.

If you have any questions on your VA benefits, please shoot me an email. I worked for the State of Oregon as a Veterans Representative until I had to take a disability retirement in 2004. I am rather passionate about seeing that veterans get the benefits they have earned by virtue of their military service!

Your knife does indeed appear to be an LB8, as Hedger pointed out. They are fairly hard to come by and usually bring a pretty fair price. The LB8 was made from 1981 to 2000 & in 2000 it had a suggested retail of $62.95.

As far as the burr on the edge goes, I am not sure why that would be. I usually finish most all the knives I sharpen on a Power-Strop with white jewelers rouge, which removes that burr. The Power-Strop is a leather wheel about 6” in diameter by 1” wide that goes on a buffer. My buffer is 1 hp Jet, turning at 1725 RPMs. Since I make & customize knives, I have the equipment to sharpen them, so that is what I use.

You can get a 4” Power-Strop that you can chuck into a ¼” electric drill.

The V-shaped wheel that comes in the kit is super for sharpening serrated knives.

The Power-Strop is the best thing I have found to remove the stubborn burr and give your edge a nice smooth & polished finish. When I ran a cutlery store we used a hard felt wheel & jewelers rouge to de-burr the edge of the knives we sharpened. I find the Power-Strop to be far superior to the hard felt wheel, though I would the hard felt if I didn’t have the Power-Strop.

You tell your son to stay safe and we pray for him and all the others every day. I don't know which is harder, raising children or keep from getting shot. I did both, Vietnam 1966-68 and 2 kids.
