I'm interested in hearing from anyone knowledgable about Ohio knife laws. LEO's that enforce them, run-ins people have had with the law here, etc.

They're so vague and confusing and the local police around here can't give me straightforward answers for a lot of my questions. They prettymuch said two things are illegal for sure, carrying any blade with intent to use it as a weapon or carrying any type of blade concealed.

If it helps, I live in North Canton, in Stark Country. I know city laws vary, so any info about my particular county would be especially appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. Ohio knife laws basically suck and are too vague to carrying anything with confidence that you're on the right side of the law. I hear alot of people say it depends on who you talk to. Some cops say you can carry an auto, others will bust a boy scout for a swiss army knife from Walmart. But if you get a CCW permit you can carry a loaded gun. Makes alot sense doesn't it?

Gun owners have the NRA. What we need is a NKA (National Knife Association). I'm all for going through training, background checks and registering for a permit if it meant I could legally carry an auto. But we'll probably never see such a thing.

Don't feel bad the vague laws hinder you a little, but protect you a lot. Well depending on how you're using your knife. It's better than if this then that will happen. Use to be similar with gun carry laws before the passed ccw. There were loopholes to carrying a concealed weapon if the situation permitted or something of that nature. They're gone now with a wonderful ultra-restrictive 90% useless ccw law!!!

I believe all unincorporated areas fall under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's offce, and thus the Ohio Revised Code.

Under ORC, there is no blade length specification, only prohibitions against carrying a concealed weapon. ALso, the automatic knife section prohibits buying, selling, transferring, etc. any auto unless one is military or LEO, however there is no provision prohibiting civilian ownership of an auto.

Various municipalities can have wide and varying laws.

Good luck.

Well I generally carry a 3 inch plain edge folder used strictly for things like work and food chores, so I don't think I'll run into trouble there.

I was however considering purchasing my first assisted opener, a Kershaw Leek. Don't know how those would be taken. I know it still needs some manual force, but I don't feel too sure about carrying one.

Also, does the concealment laws mean I can openly carry a kabar-style blade on my belt? That's another thing I'm wondering for when I go hiking and that sort of stuff.

I kind of wondered the same thing. If a civilian can own an auto in Ohio (which I've been pretty sure about) can I wear something like a Microtech Halo 3 around my neck or clipped to my belt? I'd probably have a hard time convincing a LEO that a 4 inch bladed auto is for utility purposes only although I would never use a knife to hurt anything. Maybe just to scare away some would be assailants if I had too and if that didn't work would probably just run. Again, the vagueness makes for too much risk to bother so I just carry mace or pepper spray.
