Tell me how I'm waving wrong?

So I just got my first Commander, and it feels like one of the most solid knives I've ever held. It's a beautiful, beautiful blade. But... there's always a but...

Waving this thing open makes me nervous, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It seems to snap open far too close to my skin, so much so that I've now got a six inch slash in the rear right side of one of my shirts.

I'm not sure what all information you guys need to help me out here... but am I missing something?

Hmm...when I Wave open my Commander, I usually twist it away from my body a bit during the draw, while it's still in my pocket. Practice, practice, practice!

I was wearing (I'm ALWAYS wearing) blue jeans and an untucked shirt.

Is this style of dress just unsuitable for wave openings, maybe? I tried twisting away from me, and that got the blade caught up in my shirt. Potentially lethal snag, that is...

Took me a few days to get used to doing the wave (thank you MR. Emerson for this great invention)
Try practicing for a while with your shirt tucked in. One you have it down then do it with your shirt out. That helped me alot.
Think its a matter of how high you wear your pants and how low your untucked shirt is. Because I carry a 1911 in a inside the waistband holster I tend to have low shirts and high jeans, so like you I was getting caughtup in the draw as well. One I got it down I havent had a problem.

Welcome and congratulations of the purchase.

Waving while wearing an untucked shirt, vest or any other loose cover item can be tricky. Gotta get a system down, just like drawing a pistol. Basically find what works for you.

Personally, I carry mine in my rear pockets, this frees up the area above my pockets for guns and radios and the like.

Might I suggest that you try moving the Commander to your left pocket. Drawing a "right handed" waved knife from your left side brings it forward (takes a bit of practice). This will solve your cover garment issue and you'll come out with a Commander in an Icepick grip.

There are also several neck sheaths out there that work wonders with folders.

By "away" do you all mean "behind" or to the side.
I find it easiest to pull the knife just a bit behind you...er, make sure nobody is there (who was it amongst us that opened the knife into the nose of some poor canine?)
And be sure that you hear the lock click, (or snap, or whatever automonopiac term you prefer) open, so you absolutely positively know that the knife is in the open locked position.

Awesome.

I just got my 1st Commander in this morning's mail. Keep those ideas coming!

I have a P-SARK, not a Commander, but I would guess the mechanics are about the same. I find I have no trouble if I draw straight back, with a few inches of follow-through. Too little follow-through, and it might not open fully; too much and I think you increase the risk of catching the blade, plus it's no longer in the optimal position for deployment. I tend to push down slightly as I draw, as this also helps to prevent catching on a shirt-tail.

Try giving it just a touch of extra wrist pop on the draw. When folks first get the hang of the draw, they tend to make an exaggerated draw to the rear, even after the knife is completely deployed. With experimentation and practice you should be popping the blade open just outside your picket and with no "overdraw".

Keep at it
