I saw a similar thread about Tom Mayo, and I was interested in learning more about Kit Carson and his knives. Are there any big collectors of his knives? How are these knives typically obtained (are shows typically the only way to get one directly from him?)

I had dinner last night with Kit and his wife. One heck of a nice guy, and a knifemaking legend, IMO. He's made a lot of knives, so finding one shouldn't be a problem. His knives are pretty collectable, so expect to pay for what you get. Good stuff, though.

I've got a couple of Mr. Carson's knives and, like Danbo stated, he and his lovely wife are the finest folks anyone would ever want to meet.....

Kit has been making knives for about 30 years and has many innovations that have been used by a number of different makers, including more than 90 different models marketed by CRKT and sold all over the world.

He started factory colaborations with Buck Knives in the early 1990's, such as the Buck Cross-Lock, which was one of his designs.

Here are a couple of his folders in various styles and materials....

One of the finest people I have met in knifedom and his work reflects that.

Sadly, I've never met Kit but have had a few conversations with him. Certainly, one of today's most respected makers.

His knives show up in FS areas on different forums with some regularity.

typically the only way to get a Carson folder is through a dealer or at a show?

Yes.

Kit works fairly slowly and is quite meticulous....this means that he gets quite backlogged....I'm not sure if he takes orders anymore, tried to call him just now, and got his usual message.

I have never gotten a knife directly from Kit, but HAVE had him refurbish a well carried piece and assist me on some modifications on another. Have known him for 14 years, and have found him to be a person of the highest caliber....straight, direct no BS kind of guy.

Have purchased two from Bob Neal and found his prices fair.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Correction-He has been making knives for over 35 years........that makes him really old!!!!

TOM!!!!! :D

Thanks for clearing that up.....I knew he'd been at it for a while. ;)

Kit is one of the best knifemakers and he is a cool guy in my book. He introduced "the first flipper mechanism"!
