Tell me more about my Randall please. The seller told me it was about 10 years old and that it is a number or type 1. The blade measures 8" and it does not have a sheath. Thank you.

It is a Model 1 with a stainless steel blade. That's what the "S" means. You can get a sheath from the OEM if you are willing to wait a few months after ordering. They are hugely backed up. To get an ideal fit, you'll need to send them your knife. PM me and I can give you their name/phone number.
I'm not hip enough to be able to date Randalls very closely. They started putting the metal liner in the thong holes in the mid-1970s or so, your knife is obviously newer than that.
That's a fine looking knife.

Herb,

Welcome, nice knife. As Bob said, it's a newer Model #1 "All-Purpose Fighting Knife" with an 8" stainless steel blade. The stainless steel blade is an option, as is the nickel-silver guard (hilt), the black Micarta handle, and the lanyard; the spacers are standard on your knife, although metal spacers are an option as well. If you send the knife in to the Randall Shop they'll provide you a stock, R stamped replacement sheath for around $35 plus return insured shipping; an upgraded black sheath will be $25 more. Turn-around on a common stock sheath will often take just a few weeks. So, for a new black RMK sheath, with shipping both ways, you'd be looking at close to $90. Hope that helps...

Thanks to both for the responses, I appreciate it. Regarding the guard; the lighting washed out the color and it is actually brass and not a nickel-silver color. What insurance value should I put on it if I mail it to Randall for a new sheath? I paid $150 for the knife but hopefully it is worth more than that for insurance purposes and to justify the expense of a sheath. Thanks again.

$400 bucks would be a reasonable insurance amount. Be sure to send it some fashion with a tracking number.

Herb, you made out like a bandit. Kinda gives me faith to keep haunting junk shops and second-hand stores in search of a big score like yours.

Yes, it can happen. You usually just have to be at the right place at the right time. Good luck and thanks again.

I've been thinking about the sheath. In my minds eye the black handle of the knife will blend in with a black sheath and not offer much to look at. I am thinking the brown sheath will contrast more with the knife; any thoughts?

I'd go with a brown sheath. The brown IMO will contrast more.

Herb, you may keep and cherish the knife for the remainder of your life; heck, you may even carry it with you to the grave - then again, you may decide to sell it some day; and when 'some day' comes, options resell better than non-options. A black sheath, is an option...

Having bought and later resold, close to, if not more than 1000 Randall Made knives to date; this is, of course, just an opinion... ;)

Good point, thank you.

If you want both brown AND an option, waxed sheaths are brown, but a darker brown than the standard sheaths.
