want to run this by you all and see what you think,
my temp small forge lining is shot and I will build a large one,

in the meantime, I'm thinking to take some wool, roll it into shape, line it with refractory mortar and use fire bricks around it to secure the shape.

Is this ridiculous...? :-)

When you say "wool", I'm going to assume you're talking about kaowool. If so, then I'd think the only issue would be the durability. I'm wondering how you'd keep the ceiling up. Even when doing this inside of a steel tube like many do (including all the forges in the NWBA's mentoring center) there's a durability problem with the ceiling falling down at times.

yes kaowool
this would be a temporary setup to minimize downtime, this is a quick way to get up and running until my new large steel tube forge gets fabricated.

the mortar dries pretty rigid, I think the ceiling would hold for some time.

Should work fine. You don't even need the firebricks. I have seen a forge made from a tube of chicken wire that was lined with kaowool and satanite. Works just fine.

If you've got time to forge, don't you have time to build a forge?

Yeah, produce a forge. You just took a 5 month vacation what's another week? :p

You don't know the cost of living out here... the price of unbeatable weather :-)

I produced this today in about 10 mins out of firebricks, I was able to HT 3 blades, and forged out two more

This quick and easy mock ups have the benefit also to indicate how general dimensions work against burner's size and positioning.
