Has anybody tried using the temperature crayons to check temp when heat treating. I ran my oven up to 1500 and the 1550 crayon wouldn't melt. The steel was non magnetic. What do I trust in: the non-magnetic test??

Most all of the research I've done on these forums regarding heat treating etc., everyone says to place your faith directly on the magnet. Well this weekend I heated three of my blades and used the magnet method. I think they really came out great. I've never used the heat crayons, but on the ones I've seen for sale they only went to 350 degrees. (maybe I was looking at the cheaper ones!) either way place your faith in the magnet!--Dan

Used Tempil crayons for higher temps of 1850-1950 degrees F. for differential hardening stainless. They work fine, I think they are accurate or very close.

Now using a furnace and don't need them. Have 3 of 1850 F., 3 of 1900 F., 2 of 1950 F. All unused, will sell for $45. the lot delivered surface in lower 48.

I did find with my new furnace, temps had to be raised 50 F. degrees, over the previous furnace, using the pyrometer built in both, to get the same hardening of steel.
