Okay....so I had a little time on my hands last weekend and spied a lonely stick of timkin 4142. Feeling the need to make something, I ground and filed out about a 19" blade plus handle. I am guessing this thing is around 28-32 rock and think it can be coerced into a little more.

If I am reading this correctly, timkin's sight says that 4142 as quenched hardness should be between 53-61 for smaller sections. I was unable to dig up a temper chart, but in the heat treat section they showed a temper of 1000 would leave me arount 28-32 again:rolleyes: .......Other sites I have found show inconsistent hardness levels versus temp.

Anybody think this thing needs to be tempered at all (after I heat treat it)? Maybe temper @350 as a reliever? Or maybe torch the spine?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Note: This piece will not be sold and used only by myself in the backyard.

Remember that some of these numbers are for large sections. 4140 is best used for hammers and 'hawks. A very nice steel and as a chopper knife wouldn't be too bad. You should be able to get in the high 50s for a blade as it's thin . Just temper at 400 F.
