I've been ignoring this for a long time, but it's starting to bug me. The very tip of my Chinook II came discolored. It has a little rainbow effect -- blue to red to orange to yellow -- about 2mm. Is this the dreaded sign that the factory sharpening overheated the tip, causing it to burn off the temper?

I really don't want to send it in, but . . . :(

I had a similar problem with a benchmade. The blade was loose and had that discoloration on the tip that looked like a little too much grinding. I sent it back to benchmade and they replaced the blade. I never knew if it was due to the discoloration or to the poor fit with the liner lock.

You could run a file over it and see what happens. Assuming you aren't using only moderate pressure, the file should sort of "skate" over the blade without biting into the steel. If it bites with moderate pressure then the steel is definitely too soft and you should probably send it in to them to be replaced.
