I did a search and it was pretty inconclusive about tempering temperatures for 1095 (say that 10 times fast!). The best advice I saw was 300 for an hour, 350 for an hour, then maybe 375-400 for an hour on small knives, but is there anything simpler or more definitive to use as a general guideline? I usually do my 1084 knives at 375 or so.

Hey Chiro, On all my HC blades 375 to 400 in the oven works the best. I use color to find right temp Straw - peacock depending on blade length and use. the bigger the knife the darker(spring temper) I use. I run 1 cycle then let air cool to touch then in again for another. works great and they cutttt.

Sounds right! Thanks! By the way, is that the same way you'd handle the cable damascus you sent me?

According to the ASTM info I have tempering 1095 at 400° results in a 58 HRC. I usually temper at about 350° and end up with a 59 HRC

Do the same with the cable, works great. If you don,t want to try I'll HT it for you and take notes for you :D
