Well...bow season came, killed 2, time to start making knives again. I'm making a Scottish Dirk this time. I spent some time looking at collections of the origionals (2end period) and took pictures and measurements. I was shocked at how thin the blades were so I'm going to have to change my heat treating some. I want to temper to a spring hardness. I haven't done that before. Can someone tell me the temp I need to set the oven? Any tricks?

Thanks, it feels good to be back.

Hey, peter I was wondering what happened to you, What did you kill with the bow. I'm having trouble finding something big enough to shoot, all the leaves fell and now the big boys have gone nocturnal.Good to have you back.

Bill you need to live in Indy, the deer here
just jumps out in front of you just begging
to be shoot:rolleyes: :D
That`s why I don`t hunt them much
anymore:rolleyes:

A 4 point and a Doe Bill. Having the same problem here with the deer being night feeders. The rut hasn't really started yet and it's been hot until this weekend. I was tracking them to their bedding areas and catching them in the morning with just enough light to see the pins. Muzzleloader season starts next week and they should be rutting by then.
Bow season is what takes the time to prepare for. I shoot several hundred arrows a day for the two months before the season. It also takes more scouting time. I really hate that work gets in the way of all that fun.

I'm feeling creative now though. This dirk is built with forge and file. I'm leaving the grinder for a while. I'd like to build something special for a change.

good to see you again. I too was beginning to worry. Glad to hear you are having fun. As for your question I know the color is dark blue, I think it's 600 deg, but I only use it in a differential treatment, along a spine or tang and ricasso so I don't use an oven, so I may have the Temperature wrong. Eric

Here in PA the weather has just been too darn hot; the rut is starting, but you don't see any deer moving during the day. I got a doe on the first day, but the bucks are biding their time and staying put during daylight. How am I supposed to put any time into making knives if the deer won't cooperate?!?!?
