Temperance vs. Ronin for SD

I have not really considered knives as practical defensive weapons until now (I normally walk 'unarmed' with my Calypso Jr).

I recently decided to investigate knife fighting, in order to inform my kungfu training (ie. know the threat).

It occurs to me that while learning about it is my primary goal, training would be a useful secondary goal, in case I ever encounter a personal threat that makes violating the law to go armed a serious option. I have no intention of breaking the law at this point, but if the law ever fails in its duty to protect myself or a loved one, I will feel no compunction in taking up that duty myself.

Both the Temperance and Ronin look like good options and I would be grateful if you would educate me on their relative merits and drawbacks in a purely MBC role.

Here are a couple of thoughts of my own:

Given that I would be breaking the law to carry either, blade length and other legal considerations are moot. For the same reason, concealment is important, which is why I have shortlisted these knives.

The availablilty of a Trainer for the Temperance is a plus, will there be a Ronin trainer?

I would also be happy to hear other suggestions (including non Spyderco) with reasons.

Finally, are there any upcoming MBC Seminars in UK/Europe (or how can I find out)?

Thanks

Dom

I have heard that a Ronin trainer is far off in the distance. This could be a cottage industry in the making, if someone started doing modifications.

I mean, here is a knife specifically designed for self-protection and there's no trainer available. Amazing.

Both are very good knives, by the way. I would not know myself how to recommend one over the other. Maybe if you can handle both at a knife store, the anwer may come to you.

Both the Temperance and the Ronin are great knives for MBC. The smaller, thinner Ronin will conceal easier, while the Temperance has a hand filling handle and a little more blade length. What are your priorities? How do you dress normally? How do you plan to carry it? The answers to these questions will help determine which is better for you. You might also want to look at Spyderco's Perrin Street Bowie - another excellent choice. A lot of subtleties of design that become immediately apparant when you pick it up and put it in motion.

For the purposes you stated, i.e. learning more about the craft of MBC, I´d say the Temperance. First, because you can get a trainer!
And it is a pretty good knife too, design. Bigger handle, so there´s more to hang on too. You could get a delica trainer off the shelf to see what a three inch bladed knife feels like in training.
