Temperature and brittleness

Seems the trend is towards higher RC values in knife blades.
In my lay person mind it might make the knife even more brittle.
Question what is the influence of very cold temps like 20-40 degrees below zero. Does the cold make steel more brittle?
I broke one Browning large folder in the 1970's while chipping ice and a buck fixed blade up in the Arctic.
I never have seen an original Mora laminate blade break no matter how cold. May be one of the reasons, besides being good performers and reasonable price, that they were so popular with the Dene and Inuit in northern Canada.
Any studies done to explore the possible link between very low temps and brittleness?
