Tempering big throwing knife

I have a customer who has asked me to heat treat a sizeable (17") throwing knife made from 440C. I obviously don't want this one too hard. Crucible says tempering in the 800+ range will reduce impact strength - also not desireable. The softest temper I can get below this range is about RHC54. Not exactly spring temper. Will this be OK for the big thrower? Interested in feedback from both metallugists and throwers.

Thanks.

At that hardness it shouldn't be too bad . A better choice would be 440B .

Thanks Mete

At this point, it's a little retrospective. He's put a LOT of work into symmetry and balance. I'm just trying to do it all the justice I can with heat treat. Apparently, this is a competition blade.

It does call out and say "Throw me!" - but I'm resisting the urge. :D
