tried searching but oil is too common i guess, anyhow, those of you who temper in oil, what oil do you use, i looked up flash points of motor oil and they all look to be slightly over 400, so i guess that'd be ok, i don't know if being used oil affects that though, i was thinking about picking up a cheap but hopefully acurate slow cooker and filling with oil to temper some 01 and 1-1095, what do you guys use for this? peanut oil has a higher flash point and would smell better, but i have a lot of used motor oil laying around.

I use peanut oil in my tempering bath, but I never take it over 410.I use to use high temp oil I got from a friend in the aeronautics field and its flash point was either 850 or 950,I forget.Oil is a better conductor than the air in an oven and you can hold the temp evenly, unlike an oven that goes up and down. You can also temper for less time because it is a better conductor.

Only problem that I see is with the slowcooker. I would imagine that most are very low temp as the idea is to cook s l o w l y. So just make sure that it'll get hot enough for what you're doing....

I used to use old crankcase oil 10W-30. I recently switched to Olive Oil. I pre-heat with a Bernzomatic trigger starting torch (I let the JHT-7 do the work in my one brick forge, but use the trigger start torch to get that one going as well).

I really like the results from the Olive Oil. I can quench, then wash the blade off with a bit of water, and directly into my tempering/toaster oven without stinking up the shop.

Are you guys talking about quenching, or tempering? They're two totally different things...

They're talking about tempering for things like martempering [marquenching]. This is a risky thing !!! Since the temps will be 400-500F you need an oil whose flash point is 100 F above the temperature you will quench at !!! Do it outside , have a cover to smother the fire should it happen .A large box of baking soda works well and have fire extinguishers on hand !
