How hot do you have to get a blade to destroy the temper? My reason for asking is I have removed the coating on my basic#5 and am using a dremel to make a mirror polished blade. The knife heats up pretty fast and I obviously don't want to mess up the temper. The blade has got hot enough to feel pretty warm but not hot. So what is the approximate degree to ruin the temper? Thanks Jeff

As far as the temper, you have to get the knife around 900 degrees to REALLY mess it up...Jerry can speak more about this.

BUT, I suggest you forget the dremel tool and use a ScotchBrite pad and ALOT of elbow grease to safely remove the coating.

Thanks for the info Andy, the coating I removed with a scotchbrite pad and a TON of elbow grease, but now I an polishing the blade to a mirror finish with the dremel. It is done now and looks great. I know it didnt get anywhere near 900 degrees so i'm in the clear. thanks, Jeff
