other than this forum, and word of mouth ,where or how is a good way for a beginner such as myself to learn about different tempering for different steels.I realize that alot of info has to be trial and error, but everyone has to have somewhere to start.

any and allhelp greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!

I just took a look at the site. I was a bit confused at some of the info supplied. For instance, for heat treating 1095 they suggest hardening by heating to 1650 F. and quenching in oil. Looking at the chemical composition of the steel, I just don't see anything that would justify that kind of temperature. It's a basic carbon steel for goodness sakes. The name say's is all:

1 = plain carbon steel

0 = no significant alloying element

95 = approximately .95 percent carbon

Am I missing something? My guess for a critical range would be 1450 - 1500 F. and I would probably split the difference and harden at about 1475 F.

I'd like to hear some feedback on this from some of you other guys that forge 1095.
