Cool old clip from WW2 of the Army Engineers putting in temporary road structures, many of which involve copious axe and maul work.

Thank you for this. I wonder how many fit and energetic men a western army today can muster to do tedious grunt work. Very few, probably.

All I can say is that when the S hits the F, thank goodness for the Army Engineers! Quite brilliant stuff. Here in Maine there are still corduroy roads in some rural trail areas.

In my area they are replacing many small bridges .They tear down the original , the put up portable truss work bridges while they make the new bride.

Interesting film. It might be used as a training film for people working in developing countries. Of course, many local people in developing areas have useful tricks for repairing roads, bridges and other structures - tricks that are often forgotten in our modern world.

Don't remember what I was looking for that day but this wiki interested me, a 6000 year old wooden causeway. Just thought I'd pass it on.

The early predecessor to today's pin foundations. It's sound engineering. Great way to build on non-bearing soil.

You bet they do. And are way tougher and resilient, compared to your typical modern-day man (including myself, although I'm not of the most pampered variety :) ).

Side-tracking a little bit, this makes me think about the engineering spirit of Romans. 2000 years later, roads they built are still there. An interesting read: http://www.history.com/news/history-lists/8-ways-roads-helped-rome-rule-the-ancient-world .
