When I got my tenacious from the mail the edge was a let down. It was fairly dull, it could cut stuff okay but it was not hair shaving sharp. It was surprising because Spyderco has a good rep for edges. I also don't have a sharpening system so it kind of sucked. Is this a bad lemon or is it something to expect from the $30 Chinese knife?

NOTE: I will be getting a sharpening system. There was just a lack of funds so I got a cheap EDC to hold me off. Then I will get a sharpening system and collect higher end knives.

All knives are sharpened by a human so some of them are obviously going to be less sharp than others. Sharpening is an essential part of knife maintenance, so how were you planning to get your knife sharp once it has lost it edge? A knife that needs sharpening is a not lemon by all means. Learn how to sharpen or find someone who can sharpen it for you. Mine came shaving sharp, so sharpness will vary from one knife to the other. That's why being competent at sharpening is nice when you get into knives.

Well, the first thing is this... 1) $30 .. and 2) produced over-seas...

If you want a "GOOD" knife... dont buy either of the above, and you just bought both! =D...

and also... i myself have a tenacious... it came REALLY shap outa the box, but 8CR13Mov isnt even close to the top of the list in steels especially for edge retention... and at the end of the day... why not invest in a good sharpening system? whats the point in buying knives with noway to sharpen em 0.0

just my .02... thanks

Just sharpen it yourself. You can use a coffee mug or some sandpaper, if you don´t want to buy a sharpening system. Don´t forget to hone the edge on a piece of leather. I´m sure you will get a scary sharp edge.

By the way my Tenacious was extremly sharp out of the box.

Have a nice day,

Andre

Lol I am getting a sharpening system. I just had to get a temporary EDC. I don't think overseas knives are bad. Japan knives can even better then US. About the $30 knife thing, of coarse they are not going to be as good as an $100 but they cost a third of the price and get the job done.

How do you sharpen a knife on a coffee mug, I have never heard of that.

I think that you made a great choice for an edc knife in that price range. As stated above its not a bad lemon, the sharpness varies from knife to knife. Having a good sharpening system is an essential part of having a love for knives haha. When you do get a sharpening system my advice to you would be go ahead and get a nice one like an edge pro, wicked edge or even a belt grinder. They are pricey but you will not regret your purchase and if you don't buy one now you probably will later down the road.

My Persistence came so sharp from the factory that the first time I used it ,was out popping open bales of hay.I felt something dripping all the way down my arm and was overjoyed at the sight of all that blood.I had nicked myself and never even felt it.:)The lock up is fantastic, the action is smooth and the blade steel is easy to sharpen.

The bottom of the mug is like a ceramic rod.

Happy sharpening!

My Tenacious was sharp out of the box. I usually concern my self with the fit and finish on the knife, not so much the sharpness. I can fix the sharpness easily. i usually resharpen my new knives before putting them in the edc rotation.

Other than not being hair shaving sharp, was the rest of the fit and finish of the knife acceptable?

The blade centering was off, it is really far right but it isn't touching the liner. I assume that us natural because of then cost. Other then that it is okay.
