In our training knifefighting is a part of the advanced training, however my advice is to avoid a knifefight at all times.

Respect,

Mano.

Using a tool like the training knife teaches excellent fundamentals - such as foot work, body positioning & dropping one's weight while on the move. These are some of the reasons we teach the knife (in addition to empty hand) from the get go. No waiting till the student is more advanced - we use the knife as a tool to train fundamentals. It is a '2 for 1' kind of exchange.

Dear James,

I understand your philosophy according to knife fighting and training fundamentals.
I respect that. Personally I have several reasons not to train beginners in the art of knife fighting.

Beginners need to learn the basics/fundamentals of fighting first, if one can't fight at all, one definitely can't fight with a knife. So first learn some essential basics. After the basics my students will learn how to move and fight with the short woodsticks or the wooden knives.
Important is the training in proper movement, how to gain distance and how to defend oneself, how to attack, feint and to learn different strike forms, possitioning and study of human body, the strike points, what are the human body weaknesses, etc. One need to learn all these aspects in order to become a knife fighter or a fighter at all for that matter.

Depending how one will develop I can judge if a student is ready for advanced training in knifefighting.

I agree one can use the knife in basic training or fundamental training, however in the first period of training I believe its a little prematured.

Knifefighting is an exclusive art, a way of fighting, which stands on its own, to become a skilled knifefighter one needs to be guided patiently.
First learn how to drive a car, after that, one can think of becoming a racer, its not natural to become a racer and to learn how to drive at the same time.

But then again I am just a student in life and I am still learning every day.

Respect and regards,

Mano.

interesting videos...a lot of it looks awfully similar to Muay Thai ...i didn't see any knife fighting videos though.

i teach Filipino martial arts and i agree that to be a knife fighter, knife fundamentals are taught alongside stick training. i do agree that the fundamentals are correct body positioning, solid stance, and evasive footwork.

the way i teach...i have my students spar right away after a month. that way everyone gets killed, gains a valuable experience, and gets rid of the fantasy in their heads that by training how to knife fight, they will not get cut or stabbed bs. and i also point out that the way they spar is "wrong". because of lack of experience i point out to them that a knife fight is not a duel. they assume a fighting stance and go at it. a real knife fighter will run and sidestep and set up escape as a priority or set up a counter to escape.

my two cents.

The video's on the website are basic techniques. I don't display advanced techniques on the website. Knifefighting is advanced training, so that's the reason why there are no knifefighting videos displayed. Sparring in knifefighting rocks it's funny that no matter how advanced or experienced one is as a knifefighter, one always get cut, slashed or killed after sparring with that wooden knife. Indeed a good way to get rid of all sorts of fantasies!

Thanx for your valuable 2 cents.

Regards,

Mano.
