Looks like it was given a lot of thought and might be nice to have in the survival kit. Really don't see the hammer feature though. Thought I'd ask the pros before I order one!

From the looks of things, Its trying to be too many things at once. There are some good ideas there, but too many that get in each other's way. For example, the pick-hook. I've used pick hooks, and they work best at a distance, and by allowing an angle between the hook and the object. That one would need the handle to be right near the object, which is something any ax can do. Tough chopping is going to be really hard on the points, and the blade cutout. Also with the G10 coming right up the head, its in an interference zone. If you look at the store, there is a pic on the Training seminar link. If you look at that one, it looks like part of the scale has been broken off, and re-ground.
The sharpened top edge could be used with a baton in a method similar to a shingle froe, but then the curved handle would be partly in the way. Again, could work, but then you have a massive amount of torsion on that part of the blade.

Also given what he's charging for his knives, I'd suspect you could get any number of well proven axes or hatchets for the cost. (its out of stock and I couldn't see a price listing)

and last, auto-play music on a website is enough on its own for me to walk away.

Thanks for the well thought out reply. All good points. It is for sale on RMJ's site with price and some better pics. I saw a Blade 2015 video and in hammer mode looks like it might poke you in the wrist. I'm thinking if you use it carefully it will do all is said to do.

I'm trying to like this thing

Takes its name from the Japanese mythical half man, half bird goblin that lived in the forest-

Reminds me of ManBearPig ("half man, half bear, half pig") from South Park. I think I'll pick up a couple.

Looks awesome. Won't perform for outdoor use. Martial arts?

Should be a sweet collection piece.

The Black McGyver used a version on a Naked and Afraid episode and it worked for him.

All set, thanks. Sometimes simplicity yields greater functionality.

The results I get searching that tool show a pretty hefty price tag. I can think of a lot of gear that could be purchased with the same amount if we are thinking "survival kit".

I'd never heard the word "ninjanuity" before now either though.

Appreciate all the feedback.....it's off my list for now. Have to see one in person first.

I handled one at the Blade show-It's definitely user specific-I prefer a standard hawk teamed up with a silky saw and a fixed blade.

Maybe a comparison with more traditional tools??

I have a shrike as well and a Swamp Rat Rattle hawk and maybe the very light gransfors bruks outdoor axe. Maybe a wood saw. I'll see what I can do.

I don't know if anything can beat the the GB outdoor axe though. That is the sweetest backpacking tool ever. It weighs like 19oz. The Tengu weighs about 40oz according to rmj site

Keep us in the loop. Something tells me it will be pretty functional and surprise some folks.

I got one ordered, hopefully a couple of weeks. It'll be a while before I'll be able to test it, though.

Wow 18 posts and no one has said it yet... That thing just screams "MALL NINJA". I can't see it being anymore useful than a hatchet paired with a fixed blade, kinda surprised they didn't find a way to add a bottle opener to it some where haha.

I love RMJ I own one of there kestrels and I want a couple other of there models but that thing isn't one of them.
Truthfully when I first saw it on the site I thought it was a joke. I'm sure a lot of thought went into it but it's deffinatly not for me. Now that woods hawk if seen pictures of is a different story.
