Hi. I need some help/advice. First. I'm 84 and began this adventure about one year ago. Addictive! I "make" knives and leather sheaths for their personality. I've made around 24 or so knives and sheaths over the year. Made so many mistakes it's fortunate I have a good sense of humor. Bought a "Tennessee" Bowie blank from Jantz. Gorgeous! I'm a violinist. The man who made my bow has been collecting exotic wood for forty years. He gave me some "stuff"! I have some Eucalyptus and Brazilian Cherry or "Beefwood". Any preferences? Now onto handle style. I'm stuck! I bought the guard and pommel. The blade is heavy and big time impressive. Length is 14" X 2" X 1/4" thick. Hidden tang. The Cherry is the lightest. But i'm stuck on the handle style. Need a real gripper! Perhaps a Lanyard? Help!

I put a coffin handle on a big Bowie I made for a friend. I used golden ebony. I was really surprised at how comfortable it was. If you get the dimensions right, your knuckles wrap right around the corners perfectly.

I made a prototype handle out of plywood first and played with the dimensions.

Haven't used either of those woods in the past so can't help ya there. I scored a good trade years ago too with a luthier, still got a big box of bocote from him.

I'm also partial to Coffin style handles on fighting knifes with guards/quillions...it really locks in your grip...

here's my latest Bowie with high figure maple...

I likewise bought a blank from Jantz. It's a 'Natchez Bowie' and I quite like it. Handles are ELFORYN and as for a handle shape, I heartedly recommend the coffin shape. It sits very well in the hand and makes for a secure grip.
