Hi fellow lovers of hand made. Iv'e made 4 Bowie's with the "coffin" style handle successfully. The tang on this particular blank is threaded for a Pommel. I'm fairly good at "form and function", being retired from the design field. Can't draw a handle with a 1" pommel that pleases my eye. The photo, if it uploads successfully, is the fourth. Macassar Ebony. Any help would be appreciated. Frank.IMG_0578.JPG IMG_0579.JPG

I don’t understand the issue. Which dimension on the pommel is 1inch and why does it have to be 1inch?

Thanks for coming back. Sorry. The Pommel is 1" in diameter round. Not too attractive. Having trouble bringing the handle from the guard to a 1" round at the back and still looking good.

Why does the pommel have to be round if the handle is not? Put another way, why is the handle squsre if the pommel is round?

Hi Henry. Well the supplier I bought the blank from offered a pommel for it. Nothing but round. 1" diameter. Never did pommels so this has mystery. The handle begins at the guard as a rectangle 3/4" X 1 1/4" and ends(?) in a 1" circle. 4 1/2" back. Does not work for me. I thought I was missing something. Make my own shaped pommel? Frank

I wouldn't think you'd put a pommel on a coffin style handle. I can't recall ever seeing one.

If you're going to do it though, I'd think youd want to continue the shape of the handle. Maybe start with an oversized, solid pommel and remove stock down flush with the handle?

Can you either inset the supplied pommel into the handle or carefully shape it down to fit the back of the handle as you have it currently shaped?

Might help to see a picture of the part too.

Also, do you plan on threading a pommel on or peen the tang to secure the pommel.

On a coffin handle, I think a cone pommel would work. Smaller than the dimensions of the but of the coffin handle, and peen the end of the tang. You could thread it as well, and have a threaded nut secure it.

I like the look of the knife guard and handle a lot so far.
