I need a good camping tent, and I know nothing about them. I need one that can fit two people, I probably won't be doing anything too hardcore for a while. Just something for backpacking and whatnot.

Eureka makes good tents, we had a bunch of them in scouts and considering the kinds of idiots we had in our troop(think, bug spray flamethrower), and the placed we camped (in the middle of a swamp, during a tropical storm), they held up remarkably well.

I have used a Eureka Timberline 2 man tent for the past 3 seasons in the Boundary Waters and like it a lot. I'm 6'3", 235lbs and wouldn't find comfortable room for a second person once I bring gear in with me. A 4 man sized tent is what I'd consider for two people.

My next tent will be a dome style that includes aluminum poles (not fiberglass) for strength and weight and includes a vestibule.

I have a REI Half Dome 2 and love it. I have not had it long, but I've already been a few nights in it and I have not had any problems.

Go to REI and check the tents out in person... I guess not the right time/season as all the snow gear is out. It's always good to chat with someone in the store as they can show you the features, etc. AND if you do go with any tent from REI - they have a great return policy! If you are not happy, or if your requirements change, you can return no questions asked (just keep your receipt). And NO, I don't work at REI, and mostly I like supporting the smaller companies. But really can't beat the return policy, esp. if you are a newbie. If one of your local stores offers the same guarantee, go check them out as well!

Marine to Marine,

I've got a week long expedition in Alaska (hopefully) coming up in the summer, and I've done loads and loads of research. I boiled it down to two tents or one company. My first choice is the NEMO Morpho 2P, because it doesn't have poles-I feel that it's less to lose or break. My second choice was the MSR Hubba Hubba-they're known for their durability and the company is proven. Finally, REI's customer service is top notch, and they know what they're doing.

I set my sights on the NEMO because they're used by the special forces community-if it's good enough for them, then it's good enough for me. Look into Leoadventures.com for a discount if your active duty. You can get Nemo at TacticalDistributors.com , they'll give you a mil discount, and if they don't have the tent your looking for, they can get it for you. (The military version!)

Good luck and Semper Fi.

I live a few miles from the Eureka headquarters in Binghamton, New York. They sell reconditioned tents that are like new and really cheap. I bought a like new Timberline 4 for $50. It is an awesome tent and you would never know it had been used before. If you contact them, I'm sure they would ship it to you. There are no REI stores near me, but I here they do that to.

My advice would be Eureka, REI or EMS.

There are several good brands out there, but I'd suggest looking at the REI brand tents. They tend to be well-designed and pretty good value for the money. If you are looking at sleeping 2, I'd suggest buying a 3 or 4 person tent to give youselves some wiggle room once you get inside.

I own the REI Half Dome

great price with a great weight

i own the same one and i love it...

Agreed.:thumbup: The REI brand tents are very well made, light weight, and great layouts IMO.

I have the Half Dome, and the Roadster one man tent. Both are very light, and have good sized vestibules.

Edited to add..... the REI prices are also decent compared to some of the other name brands. Mtn Hardware, Marmot, Big Agnes, and Outdoor Research just to name a few.
