Finally back from some health related issues!

I am soon to celebrate ten years as a knifemaker.

This piece, in a many ways, represents what I have done over the last ten years, what I am doing now, and what I look forward to doing in the future.

This project was inspired by a enquiry I got regarding a small piece that I made a while ago, but as a larger "art-design", and it was intended to be a
prototype for a very similar piece with different pattern steel that would follow.

Things started coming together better than aniticipated, so I thought I would put in some extra work in terms of details, as opposed to what was first intended.
In addition to that, my inspiration was fueled by the idea of this piece representing my first ten years of making knives.

It may seem strange to make an axe to celebrate my anniversary as a knifmaker, but it makes sense to me, in that I look forward to trying my hand at new things in the coming years. In addition to what I allready do.

This piece is named 'Horizon'. The name represents looking back at what has been, and looking forward at things to come.
The Horizon emcompasses past, present and future.

The blade is made from a custom forged Damasteel billet that was about an inch thick and weighed around 2000grams (aprox 4.5lbs).
Hacksawing, bandsawing and grinding away material left about 320grams (aprox 0.7lbs) of the billet, with the blade being close to an inch thick where it meets the handle.

The handle is Ironwood, and the metallic accents are made from bronze and from cut-offs of the Damasteel billet.
The same goes for the details in the stand and "sheath" as well, which connect it all together.

Overall length is 310mm (12.2") and it weighs 660grams (1lbs 7oz)

I am planning to have this piece on my table at the Scandinavian Knifemakers Guilds Internatoinal Knife Show in January 6-7th ( http://www.helsinkiknifeshow.com/ )
I hope to see some of you there!

Any and all thougts and comments are welcome!

I'll I can say is beautiful work. Looks like perfection to me. I'd like to see your work in person someday. Maybe an excuse to visit Sweden. I followed the link to your website...very nice! Thanks for showing. Mike

The powerful and stylish blade, the flowing line, the beautiful handle and fittings, individual style excellent sheath...it must be one of your masterpiece.
Great work, Magnus-san !

I scrolled down, got to the pic and said, "that is so damn cool....." And it is. Congrats on 10 years!

AWESOME Magnus! Your skills reflect those of someone that has been making knives and crafting things for a lifetime!

I already used the words which first came to me when I initially saw the pictures of this masterpiece, so I'll keep the moderators happy here and just say well done my friend. You've created something extraordinary here.

Magnus - that is just outstanding. The axe alone is more than a worthy creation to celebrate the occasion, but then you add in the sheath and that terrific stand.... WOW!

That sound you are hearing is me breathing lonnnng and steady. In awe and admiration.

So very cool. Fantastic photography, too, showing the all-important facet edges.

Bravo!

^ha! Me too- you said it better lol

WOW!

SPECTACULAR! That is something completely different, yet directly recognisable as something you made. Very, very nice. Beautiful wood, beautiful damascus. And the "sheath" is very nice as well.

I like it! :)

Finally back from some health related issues!

Sorry to hear that, I hope everything is OK now!

kind regards,

Jos

Fantastic piece Magnus. Your designs are consistently unique and visually balanced; and your level of execution appears to be superb.
... and don't get me started on your photo skills.
Great work.

Absolutely out of control (in a good way!). Signature Magnus Axelson creativity that not only has a wicked blade and handle but also the additional finishes and accouterments.

Happy tenth anniversary and glad to hear you are feeling well. I continue to take great pleasure in seeing your creations!!!

Magnus, I'll echo what everyone else is saying - what a masterful piece! Truly exquisite!

and wait til you hold one! Magnus makes objects the are made to be held. They look amazing, but their 'feel' in my experience are what complete the package.

That is another WOW!! piece AM. You continue to outdo yourself and this one is just magnificent. As Roger said it is great and then add the sheath and here is a piece many a collector would love to have. Congrats!!
