Term for the flat side of the blade?

Hi!

Some time back when I didn't loathe cold steel, I ordered vaguero grande. The knife itself was good guality, I was dissappointed by the blade however. You see, the other side of the blade was completely flat (not similiar to the side that you see at promotional pictures). I have noticed that in CS promo dvd's (that don't prove anything btw) these guys almost always hold the blade in "promotional" way.

Is there any term for this flat side of the blade? Is there any way to identify and avoid this kind of blades other than holding them in hands?

Thanks,

You are reffering to a chisel ground.

This type of blade has a grind that is made on only one side of the blade. While one side of the blade remains flat surfaced, the other side of the Chisel Ground Blade is cut at an angle so the blade, when viewed from the tip back, looks like one half of a "V" ground blade. Most often used for making blades of chisels, axes, and swords, this grind is also used on some knives, however it is not as common as the flat grind or "V" grind.

Just look for blade grind descriptions with knives you are interested in.
