Hey guys. anyone own a James Terrio knife? He has a website and claims to be a custom knifemaker. he has an active phone number which I called a couple times and left messages but he wont return my calls, wont return emails either. By accident I found some very recent posts on the web by him so I know he's alive and active. I really wanted him to make a couple knives for me as I was impressed by his quality and attention to detail. Is this guy legit or what?
I've went ahead and ordered a knife from another maker because terrio never got in touch with me. I was dissapointed because were in the same town and I wanted to give a local my business. I'm just confused about the non response.

I don't have any personal experience with James, but I do know he is a very active member here with around 10,000 posts. A little digging shows that he has posted on BF as recently as 20 minutes ago. Have you tried sending him a PM?

I bought one of his medium bushcrafters from him a little bit ago. It is a nice knife. He has a "for sale" thread in the custom makers forums.

I'm not sure what the deal is with your issues on contacting him though. How long ago did you leave messages?

Well shoot. I apologize for not returning your calls. If you ever need to get ahold of me, shoot me an email or pm... phone messages tend to slip between the cracks :o

I'm glad you were able to find another maker to fit your needs; I'm so swamped right now that current lead-times are running close to 6 months, so I'm not really taking any orders anyway.

Also keep in mind that this is pre-Blade show season, many cutom knife makers are busy right now, and every year around this time.

Yes, I've net him, even handled and used one of his knives this past weekend.
If you decide to give him another chance, try sending an email in late June or Mid-July with the specs for what you want along with a sketch.
If you don't want to wait that long, there are several makers with their own subforums here, some of whom have shorter waits currently.

Yes, he is ok:D

I have had the pleasure of reviewing one of his knives. They are not just good looking. James knows a thing or two about performance and how to get at it.

Just make your intentions clear and let him know your expectations (what sort of things you expect to do with your knife) and he can help you build a monster.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get a prompt response. He's making a knife for me and I would give him another chance. All my interactions with him have been pleasant. He doesn't respond to all e-mails, but I chalk it up to him being busy. Time spent responding to me and others means falling further back on his schedule.

I've also yet to meet a maker that responds to all e-mails or delivers product "on time". You have to remember that it is a cottage industry. At spyderco they have several employees and if one goes down the knives continue to get made. In a cottage industry if they get a surge of new orders, get sick, a blade cracks at heat treat, take a vacation, etc. it messes with the schedule. Finally, his delay at 6 months isn't that bad considering he truly makes custom knives. There is a 3 year wait for skookum bush tools, which are all basically the same. It's all a matter of perspective. Good luck with your custom knife.

I have a Terrio custom that I recieved a few months back. Probably my favorite fixed blade. Too bad you weren't able to get in touch, he does great work. Really good guy and really great maker, keep in mind in the future.

I can't speak highly enough about James. I commissioned him for a very "off-the-beaten-path" job and he really pulled it off. In this age of super inter-connectedness , it's still possible to not be able to hook up right away, or people have life going on. But I can say this, if you go with James and Angie, you will never regret it....

These were no small chore, 18" overall, with a 12" edge, the blanks weighed 2.5 lbs when he started, and 2.0 lbs when he finished. He did a great job, and now I just have to do mine....

Thanks again James!

Ooooh good to know :D I was waiting for Mr. Terrio to get back to me via email on a knife as well, I had the funds to pay for it too, two months ago haha, figured he was busy.

Edit: Haha just saw James post above, glad I held off, I'll definatly keep in touch and shoot you an email when I have the funds again.

I really appreciate your patience and support, guys, and I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you!

I have a James Terrio Sidekick, and I can say that I knew him before he became famous. LOL. James has answered the phone when I called him.
