Knifemakers, have you ever had a problem setting a peice of sandpaper down?

Have you ever spent 3 hours working on one section of a knife finish?

Does a 3000 grit finish just not look "smooth enough"?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions you minght have L.S.S.!

(Last Scratch Syndrome)

How come even on user peices that just need a belt finish I cant help but pull out the sen and the paper and put at least a 400 grit finish on it? Even then I cant help from buffing it and removing even the miniscule scratches that still show up then?

I think something has to be done about this terrible debilitating condition common to knifemakers.

If someone you love is suspected to have LSS, there are some common signs of the condition. Fingers that will not straighten out without cramping. Strange dark silicon carbide colored stains on the tips of the fingers and down the front of the pants. The strange smell of steel no matter how much you wash or bathe. Stains on the fingernails no matter how much you clean them.

Help me LSS is a common affliction that must be stopped before it affects the young knifemakers and affects their everyday lives...

Hello, My name is Kit. I'm a knifemaker. I had it about 10 years ago. Went to the doctor and he prescribed 15,000 mg of bead blast finish. I've cut it back to 500 mg of ceramic bead and I seems to be over it.

That is called attention to detail!! That's what makes a great Knifemaker! I would begin to worry if the L.S.S. starts going away.
And it goes beyond removing the last scratch...
Like laying in bed, unable to sleep while your mind seems to be processing knife designs on its own....
Going to a wedding and having to pack at least one of your own knives, just in case someone might want to see one....
Getting rid of a classic sports car to make room to expand the shop....
I realized that it was more than an obsession the other day when my daughter, 7, was flicking and closing my new Dalton, (thanks Drac Noroc)like she's been around knives all her life or something.......
It's downright scarry!

we're gonna need 100cc's of sandpaper stat. hehe. i only do hand rubbing, then buffing, now that i can't figure out how to belt finish with similar results. since it hurt my fingers, i'm gonna try diamond polishing, eventualy.

I just bought a couple syringes of that diamond polishing compound. Intend to put it on some hard felt buffs and see how it works. They have grits all the way to 100,000 (YEP ONE HUNNERT THOUSAND!)...if you can find scratches after that, it's time for an intervention.;-)

i've talked to him about it, his prices seem a little high on that though, his ivory prices are excellent though.

I bought it from Mike Willowya...his prices were cheaper than what I've seen advertised elsewhere.
I'll post my findings when I get 'round to using it....the 5hp grinder is taking up my time at the moment!
