in the book "how to make multi-bladed folding knives" Terry Davis talk a little about making his extremely low temperature freezer his freezer can get to -180 F and I was wondering does anyone know how this would work? or how I could contact him to ask?
Thanks

Ultra-low refrigeration generally uses a two step, or cascade vapor compression system.

Yep to get that low u would have to build a casxade system. Doable ive scene overclockers do it before

this is an interesting link http://www.refrigeration-engineer.com/forums/showthread.php?2984-Cascade-Refrigeration-System to people discussing a similar topic I believe Terry said that he uses a two cascade system and two 1hp cold rated compressors-but I don't really understand how that works does anybody have some links or could explain how it works? terry said that he can do his blades really cheaply something like 50 cents a knife-wish I could find some plans on making a small one.

In a two stage vapor compression system......

The low stage compressor operates with a high pressure gas, special oil, and an additive, usually pentane, which is condensed by the first or high stage compressor evaporator.

Google images for the "cascade vapor compression system" and it should make better sense. I worked on cascade systems for about three years.

Thanks! I didn't think of looking at the images on Google that helps have something to look at. Could you convert a regular freezer to a lower temp freezer?
Thanks
CH

Anything is possible. Though ultra-low refrigeration isn't very forgiving of messy work. I doubt a rookie could build one that handled the heat flux a knife maker needed to deal with.
