Just got my CE Starmate. Awesome folder. Rock solid loack-up. Thick blade. Tough G-10 scales. It is rather thin (good thing) yet has a hefty feel. Want to use it as my EDC and give it a run, but sonce these are discontinued, I might try to keep it mint or near mint. Thoughts on that??

Use it. No use in saving a perfectly good working type knife. What are the odds this is gonna be some kind of collector icon in the future? I'd say not much. There are lots of them out there. These are knives made and meant to be used by their owners. IMO, it would be a waste to let a Starmate sit in the display case when it could be serving you. If you want one to keep in the collection, get another. I had three Starmates at one time a year or so ago.:D I love that design.
Just my opinion. You do what you feel is best for your situation.

Use it. I always figure that most production knives aren't going to become collector pieces. However, I have seen that some increase in trade value as some knives are discontinued because of new collectors missing the release.

steve,

Use it!!!
I've been using one ever since they were introduced - a great knife, my favorite - use it and enjoy it.

The real beauty of the Starmate, in my opinion ,is not so much in the eye of the beholder but in the hand of the user: to fully appreciate this knife I urge you to use it !

just bought one myself... hope to love it but doubt if it will replace the 93mm rescue as my EDC.

I'm getting a Starmate (PE) through the mail next week and I only plan to carry it occasionally. Partly because I really like the way it looks and I want to keep it that way. Second, because I get the impression the 440V blade's hardness should have been 55-57 like current 440V's instead of 59-61. That its more brittle than other comparable knives. If I'm way off base on this please feel free to dispute this :D

Okay, so its not going to be collector's item and the value isn't going to appreciate. But if YOU really value a certain knife what does it matter how other may price it? Call me crazy but I like the Starmate more than certain knives that cost 2 or 3 times as much. The important thing is do YOU really like it and do YOU want to keep it in its present condition? If you do, get another one or something else for hard use. I can always get another Military or BM AFCK(these will be around for a long time I believe) but I may never be able to get this beauty again.

I believe only prototypes had the harder blade. Most if not all production pieces are the softer blade. I've beat my Starmate pretty hard. No chipping, except the tip when I tried to pry a nail out of my tire. But then, I shouldn't have been prying with the tip. Only chipped off about 1mm, easily sharpened out. The one problem I've had is the pivot pin gets loose and finally needed to be lock-tighted in.
