Test Before Trust

Thia was discussed a few days ago, but I got yet another lesson in the need to test gear before trusting it to function.

Local store had Adventure Medial Kits "SOL Survival Medic" kit so cheap it made sense to but it just for the components.

The 20 mm button compass does not work. Shake it enough and it points north every once and a while but just as likely to point south. Face rotates with the case.

Tried a Sun 20 MM and a Silva 25mm in same place and they worked fine.

So here is a product from a respectable company that is broken out of the "box."

Contacted AMK by their 800 number. They are sending a replacement,. As I said, "a respectable company."

Always test all my equipment-and your experience reminds me to never stop

Thanks for posting your story

Anything that failure could cause a problem gets tested in the back yard as soon as I get a new tent I start watching the weather for a storm . I got some strange looks from the neighbors when I set up a tarp lean to and pad on the ground when we were expecting ~ 0 temps to check out my cold weather bag. A 0 degree bag failing in the back yard isn't a problem, failing 5 miles from the truck at 3:am is

You would think that your practice is obvious wisdom. Must not be. Many times I have seen people trying gear for the first time and finding it did not work well - or at all.

People tend to trust the stuff they have bought, over themselves. I think its kinda a self-affirmation thing, "I spent money which I worked hard for, I'm smart, therefore I bought good equipment"
Good call on the testing of the compass though.

Unfortunately common sence isn't that common anymore
Fire ,knife and lights I'm usually redundant on.

Do you suppose "common sense" is part of the same tendency that causes us to call the biggest kid in class "Tiny"?

Lol this is very true. it sucks to find out the hard way. I always talk to people who just bought a new gun and have never fired it. I just laugh. why are you carrying a freaking gun that you have never shot? you have no idea if the sights are on or if it actually runs with certain types of ammo. I won't even carry a gun with less than 500 rounds through it.

I see it the same way with any gear that your going to place your life on the line with. good reminder sir!
