Test of knife protectives

Has anyone done a test of knife lubricants and protectives, such as Tuf-Cloth, Militec-1, White Lightning etc?

I have looked at various rust inhibitors in the past. What I have found is that it is not difficult to protect a blade from rusting if you don't use it. Even a simple coat of oil will stand up for a very long time, how long depends on the enviroment. Soaking in salt water is different from heavy rain if you live next to the ocean, for example.

I have used a number of products that claim high levels of wear resistance, as they "bond" to the metal. I have found with all of them that it only takes a few minutes work doing brush cutting (soft vegetation) to remove the product completely as the blade rusts just the same as it if had never been applied.

Based on this I just use a simple oil for regular protection. However some of the protectants are more portable, and not as messy to apply as oil, Marine Tuf-Cloth for example.

I tested various oils, and soon I'll make a similar test with car wax and other oils.
I'll publish the results in another post, so that averybody can benefit from them.

I second this. A 'marine' tuf-cloth goes with me to the field (and gets used on my blades & tools before going to the field), and Rem-oil / rag / 'normal' tuf-cloths get used the rest of the time.

Take a look / read up on Tuf-cloths here: http://www.sentrysolutions.com/tuf-cloth.html
