Hi Guys,

I've been playing around with Gimp, using the tutorial Patrice posted some time ago. This photo shows all the techniques Patrice talked about, with the exception of the borders and name. (Still working on that). Along the way I discovered the paintbrush tool, thus the black background. So, what do you guys think about this photo. Be honest, I can take it (gulp).

I think I'd like to see that knife out of the sheath, and to answer your question ..... nice pic.

Looks slightly under exposed. Tighter picture - get in closer. What camera are you using? Nice knife!

I like the insert and drop shadow, as stated more knife less background. and really don't like the black "Paint brushing" too overwhelming. Great Knife!

I appreiate the input , guys. Ryan, I wasn't really sure about the black background, so thanks for your comment. BMK, I'm using an Olympus D-510, an older camera. I was pretty close to the knide when I took the pic, but I'll play around with it a little more.

1-10, thanks. I'll try to reduce the background and get tighter on the knife. R Mark Lee, here's a picture, a bad one I'm afraid, of the knife. for your info. it's an 8" antiqued 1095 bowie with mild iron fittings and a ironwood and boartusk handle. I also have quite a few pictures of this knife in my album, if you care to go there.

With the componets I see in the first pic I would angle the knife diagonally to add more dynamics and allow for a larger inset pic. The pic itself looks good to me, nice lighting and focus (maybe a hair under exposed but no biggie). I would loose the black frame, it adds nothing and really detracts from the subject. Great looking knife, btw.

If you get close enough, you will need a macro lens or a macro setting on your camera for things to be in sharp focus. Keep playing with it and look at what setting changes do to the photograph - trial and error.

Thanks Flashpoint, I appreciate your suggestion and compliment. BMK, don't know if I have a macro setting, time to dig out the camera manual.

You have a little Flower over the top button. That is your Macro you can focus as close as 8" when in the macro setting.
