Inspired by GM's fabulous pictures, I'm experimenting.

This is the first test picture. What you think?

Very nice Jackie, those look great. I see you won that #147 wooden handled Schrade Walden,I got the #147 serrated blade one, happy collecting,G.M

G.M.,

Thanks. Hope you don't mind me borrowing some of your ideas.

It appears we clash quite often on Ebay. It's a shame that you don't know who you're bidding against with this new Ebay system.

That was a nice 147LWE you won. It looked to be near mint. I have one with a different Tang Stamp to it.

I am excited about that WW but I'm not sure if it's a 147 or not. It wasn't stated. I really need more WondaWoods in my Schrade-Walden collection. Along with a 140WW it's makes two total. Schrade-Walden Fixed Blades are the only Schrades I collect.

I saw two S-W 147 Craftsman 9509 Candy Stripes posted on Ebay yesterday. We should get together and decide which ones we're going to bid on.

You have a great day.

Beautiful Fixed blades......Its not impossible to know who you are bidding against..e..g. if I see someone currently with 513 positives its a fair bet its Codger and I dont bid....I just update his feedback total from time to time and always know his total..I appreciate the knowledge he willingly shares on this forum to all our benefit so why place bids against him..been the same for the past 3 years.......<I hope Codger doesnt mind me sharing this publicly>

As the "test" pic is a 171UH, i thought i'd show off my recent, inexpensive, ebay acquisition: Schrade-Walden/N.Y. U.S.A./171UH, serial# 18515, in very good, unused condition:

and with it's younger brother: SCHRADE/U.S.A. 171UH, serial# 93498 which i think is from the 90-91 reissue:

roland,

Nice knives. I noticed that your S-W 171UH doesn't have the upswept at the end of the blade. Is that an earlier variation?

Have to do a little research. Schrade-Walden never ceases to amaze me.

i think it is a variation. the edge and tip look absolutely untouched.
i think this is from 1973, as the ones from '71 & '72 had a "brass cap" for a pommel, if i am reading Clemente correctly.
maybe others could pull out their 171s and look for a tip like this, plus show an example of the "brass cap" ?
roland

My friend Arnold was especially fond of these. The first 171UH did not have a brass cap, but a birdshead pommel.

G.M.,

I noticed that the seller of the two S-W 147 Craftsman Strawberry knives posted on Ebay yesterday has removed one. An error was stated.

Hi Jackie, I noticed it was gone also, thought maybe you got it. Anyway i put a bid on the other one, feel free to bid against me,maybe one of us will get it anyway, good luck,Dick

G.M.

I really don't want to do that. I'll just pass on this one. Catch the next one.

Besides, the monthly knife budget took a big hit today. I accidentally ran across a Schrade-Walden 153UH Golden Spike SN: 01666 with both boxes and paperwork. Even though I got a great deal on it, it cut deeply into my remaining budget.

Good luck on getting that Strawberry. Plus, I got my eye on another 147.

Those are cool pics
It's also a great way to make a pictorial database of your knives

thanks Michael; now i'm on the lookout for a 171 with the bird's head pommel.
i think it makes the knife look classier, but i think they are pretty rare.
roland

Rare? I have #02432. The approximate number of 171UH made with the birdshead pommel in 1970-71 was 10,000. The actual quantity could be slightly higher, but not by much. Arnold tracked them and the highest serial he had recorded was #10,992.

Here is an archived picture of one of Arnold's with all the bling (papers, box etc.):

He and I discussed and compared this pattern at length. It does seem that the earlier ones (entire first production at least) were hand ground on that false edge of the clip and there was quite a bit of variance in them.

Michael

That is a low number. Mine is a 3026, not too far off from yours Michael. I don't have the box, just a sheath.
Tom

by "rare" i mean that i have not seen one listed on ebay in the last 18 months.
the term "rare" as applied to collectable knives has been discussed elsewhere(BRL, i think). if i recall correctly, there is no standard for this term, so i guess it is just subjective, but also overused by some ebay sellers for sure.
if a 171UH with birdshead pommel shows up soon, we're all going to be bidding against each other. i don't like this situation; preferred the old way, where you had the option of "giving a break" to a forum member.
