Morning Hogs! It’s been a while since I’ve posted some knife usage or “scientific testing”. With current events and uncertainty looming the past week (see sparks note up top), I’d like to take a moment to bring things down a bit and talk knife stuff, personal updates, where we are in our knife journey, and where we’d like to be in the future.
First up, there are SO MANY new models coming out of Wauseon I can barely keep up! I’ve been out of the trough lately due to a big move. While preparing for this move, I started looking at old threads from 2017-2020 and there’s something I miss about that era of my knife journey. People were doing regrinds and modifications, actual edge testing was at its peak, and good lord the photos were mesmerizing..
With this move and new workspace,
I’d like to bring some of that magic back and if there’s a demand, to learn how to do regrinds and mods for the community.
There was a time I wanted a Scandi ground Busse knife, and a while back I got the closest thing to it. A reground Boss Jack no choil. VERY THIN EDGE.
I went full on balls to the wall and fed it some nails laid over a brick… then I grabbed the TGLB.. then the INFIDU.. then a couple other knives to compare. I’m sure I lost a bit of my sanity that day.
The results spoke for themselves. But in the end I had an overwhelming “that was stupid” feeling. Especially after maiming the Scandi-Jack. About 15 mins on the Ken Onion and she was back in good shape. Here are the results of that fateful day. Keep in mind the brand names have been blocked out of respect, for they make amazing knives. This is merely a test of the materials and HRC used and DOES NOT speak of the quality of the blade itself nor the skill of the maker.

Just a summary
-Scandi Jack had some denting and rolling. Micro chipping at worse from the brick.
-INFIDU with a low edge angle rolled but not as much. No chips, just micro rolls from the brick.
-The TGLB was unfazed, probably due to having a more standard edge angle. Pass flying colors. Could have probably batoned the brick itself.
-The other Scandi at lower hrc had much worse deformation from the nail but no chips.
-Magnacut slicer had a blow out.. gonna be fun sharpening that out.. and to be fair it wasn’t smart to even include it in this test but I was in a “testing frenzy”
-S35vn was intersting. Minor rolling from the nail but the brick chipped it in places I wasn’t expecting.
One things for sure. INFI + Scandi = a happy Jack.
17 chops on dried walnut.

The big question for the polls. This Scandi Jack only weighs in at 11.2 ounces, and is quickly becoming my most carried Busse.
How much would you be willing to pay to have a light brigade treatment on your favorite model that you might not carry as much because of its weight?
Hope to hear from you all and Happy Humpday Busse and friends!
