Been awhile since i've been on, works been crazy, to that end I got a few to escape. I had recently gotten my youngest a hammock and grabbed a deal on some opened for storage but new mss bags because he's expressed an interest in coming backpacking. So I got him a Byer of Maine Moskito Kakoon, I like this thing almost as much as my hennesy and its a 1/3 the price, granted I wouldn't be rough and tumble with it but it should hold up. Given my lack of planning I had to get creative I took one of my daypacks and fed the compression straps from the bag and the mss through each other for my kid and I've wondered if my edc bag could work with the mss with the molle on the bottom so...

Here they are packed and ready to go with some test walks around the house ;-)

Since I got the 7 I've been wondering if it would fit on the shoulder straps, it does!

Here we are ready to go

He's got this thing with climbing rocks that are split

The spot we were going to is a short steep climb gaining 700 ft in a 1/2 mile

Just beating out the sunset almost to the ridgeline

If I kept the straps tight and get the bag from sagging down my back the 7 was a real nice carry but the straps are real tight so I don't think I'd deal with it long term, my edc bag and the mss worked great little clunky and heavier than most would want for a backpacking trip for but you could do 3 days out of that bag easy, if I figure out a way to strap the hammock outside I could get more clothes in / food in and extend the trip

The Moskito Kakoon comes with a rope suspension and that damages a tree so I got eno slap straps and during his test hangs I was tying knots and I decided to try something new and I switched to carabiners and repel rings, this made setting up in the dark a breeze and when it came to tensioning the hammock, it no worse than cinching the strap on my motorcycle helmet, I'll be doing the same for the hennesy before the next trip

Some tea before bed, the stove is a $5 knockoff from ebay, its kicks ass its like a piezo but with an ignitor this was its first time out, the gsi cup and tea are normally in my edc bag

My hennesy explorer deluxe if you get one customize it for the bigger rainfly you'll thank me, its free and while the one I have works to keep you dry it lacks rooms for adequate gear protection or room to work. I didn't realize how nice it would be until I had my sons setup to compare against

My kid testing out the bear grylls canteen cup boiling water for oatmeal, the canteen keeps water cold and nesting cup boiled about the same as my gsi cup and the was no discoloration to the nesting cup $10 cheaper than my nalgene gsi setup and most likely more useful due to its shape and size, you could do meals in it better

I tried the MSS by itself on the ridge, I started out warm but with out a groundpad within 3 hours I was colder than I wanted to be. I got up and got in the hammock, I had both bags with the bivy and just moved it into the hammock. Convection didn't seem to bother it like the ground and and I was warmer than I wanted to be within 20 minutes I ended up leaving the bags unzipped and covering me and that worked well for the next 4 hours to where I didn't want to get up. I'll need a closed cell pad if I try the ground again with the MSS at least below 50F given it was 48F

Time to go and thanks for checking out the pics

I let the straps out a bit and the 7 rides higher oddly enough its perfect to reach up and grab but I think it would find its way to getting tangled into things

Nice outing. Looks like a great way to spend a couple days. I usually find that temperature range tough....cold weather bag is too hot, warm weather bag is not warm enough.....

Thanks for sharing, and pass along well wishes to your son.

And that's why I got the mss one bag to do it al . My son used the black bag and the bivy and was fine

That is such a great picture of you and your son. Brought a smile to the end of my day.... Great looking time you had there. Thanks for sharing it.

Mrs. C.

Thanks for the pics, the trip looked like a lot of fun.

What all do you have bundled with your bk2?

Looks like a great time! It's nice to see parents spending quality time with their kids. Especially doing things like this! Love the pictures!

good stuff - and I agree on the stove, they're awesome and cheap enough I've been able to afford giving several away.

Nice outting, thanks for sharing. Makes me look forward to doing the same with my son when he's a bit older.

It's changed a little since I did this thread but I swapped for a better firesteel, I changed out the wave for a sidekick, I have a tops flat whistle in the inside hidden pouch of the leatherman case, and a bullet spacepen. Other than that its still the same as when i first did it. I was going to change the paracord to webbing but I think i'd prefer the extra paracord instead so to get a little more width I'll end up chaning it to a double cobra weave

Thanks man, I don't ever push it on any of my kids I just keep offering and sooner or later they come along ;-)

I'm definitely ordering a few more

All my kids started with me at different times, my oldest (28) starting coming out with me when he was 6 and conversely my youngest not till this year (14) both my daughters have loved camping since they were little. So I've been lucky my kids like to share in my passions.

Great trip report M.I., thanks for sharing. Glad your son was able to join you on your outing. And that breakfast time view…[emoji106] Awesome stuff.

Looks like a good time out man, thanks for sharing.

Great thread buddy! It is always great to see kids loving the outdoors. I wish I could eat breakfast with a view like that everyday.

If you end up going to the fall gathering bring your hammocks and we will have a group hang.

Jeremy

Good thread!

Looks like a heck of a time!

Great stuff, Nothing like a father/son outing, cant wait to do it with my boy, hes only 5 but we still camp out. Some great gear you guys are carrying a fair bit of it too.

Those pics of the outdoors a very reminiscent of the Australian bush, with the large ground rocks ect..

Very enjoyable thread mate with awesome pics, and good to put a face to the name.

This is my favourite type of thread. Getting outdoors with some really cool kit. Even better when you get to spend that time with your offspring. Onya M.I., glad you had a good time with your young bloke. Really cool..

Thanks for sharing this with a lot of pics! We're looking into hammocks now since the wife saw so many at the spring gathering. Going to check these out!

love that carpet :D

good hammocks

nice views!

My daughter was just asking about it the other day, I'm going to try to be there for sure and now get her a hammock too! LOL

For women that would like more privacy for changing and such or just better protection from the elements or for everyone really you can get tarps with blast doors, if you didn't want to spend almost 3x the cost of the hammock (Moskito Kakoon) on a tarp with removable blast doors get a 10x14 or a 12x14 utility reflective/silver on the inside tarp (its double the weight and doesn't pack as small (4"x 11.5") as said tarps but cost is generally <$35) and what I do is the ridgeline gets the 14' length, then stake out the two center grommets on the sides and I use hearty twigs as toggles to make doors with the ends and either guyline the joined bottoms or stake them directly and you've got make shift doors. And these two hammocks allow you to lay flat if you lie at an angle (head and feet in opposite corners)

love that carpet :D

good hammocks

nice views!

Ya man! looking forward to our next trip out, we're talking of going to one of the shelters built in 1922 that gives you views of 5 of the 7 lakes of 7 lakes drive and a on clear day the nyc skyline, there are some grassy areas above / behind it figure we'll set up and hang there

Great pics; thanks for sharing.

Good for you guys - quality time!
